The evening had been long and tiring for Mira, but as she walked through the door of her home, a sense of calm washed over her. She'd picked up some food on the way back—a small comfort for her and her grandma. She had spent most of her day dealing with the chilly atmosphere at work, trying to push aside the growing tension between her and Ethan. The sarcastic remarks, the cold exchanges—they all took their toll on her, but for now, she was just glad to be home.

"Mira's back!" she called cheerfully as she closed the door behind her, the food bags rustling in her hands.

She couldn't hear her grandma's usual response, the faint shuffle of feet, or the familiar hum of her voice. A small knot of unease formed in her chest.

"Grandma?"

Mira called, stepping into the hallway and looking down the dark corridor to her grandma's room.

Silence.

She assumed her grandmother had fallen asleep early. The old woman had been tired lately, and Mira had noticed her slowing down over the past few days. It wasn't unusual for her to nap in the afternoons, especially after a long day.

So, Mira shrugged off the sudden unease and headed to the kitchen to hydrate herself.

The cool, refreshing water slid down her throat, a small relief from the tension of the day. She leaned against the counter for a moment, allowing herself to breathe, to forget for just a second about the cold distance that lingered between her and the world outside.

But something tugged at her.

Grandma?

She set the glass down and made her way toward her grandma's room, the hallway seeming longer than usual. As she reached the door, a strange chill ran through her.

It wasn't like her grandma to sleep so soundly, so quietly.

Mira pushed the door open with a soft creak, the dim light from the hallway spilling in. At first, her eyes had to adjust to the darkness, the room smelling of lavender and old books.

Her heart skipped when she noticed the shape on the floor.

Grandma's favorite chair was empty, the soft quilt draped across the armrest as it always had been. But there, lying near the bed, on the cold hardwood floor, was her grandmother.

"Grandma?" she whispered, stepping into the room, her voice filled with uncertainty.

There was no response.

The room was eerily still. She crossed the room in a few hurried steps, her heart thudding painfully in her chest. "Grandma? Are you okay?"

But her grandma didn't respond.

A cold wave of panic swept over her as Mira knelt beside her grandmother. She gently shook the frail body, calling her name again and again. "Grandma! Please wake up! Please..."

But her grandmother didn't budge. Not a flinch. Not a breath.

Mira's fingers trembled as she reached for her grandma's wrist, trying to find a pulse, anything, but there was nothing. The stillness that hung in the air felt suffocating, and Mira's chest tightened painfully as the truth began to settle like a heavy weight on her heart.

"Grandma!" Mira cried, her voice breaking, tears welling in her eyes.

She lifted her grandmother's frail body, shaking her gently, desperately. "Grandma, please... please open your eyes. Please don't leave me..."

The reality of the situation crashed down on her with an unforgiving force. Mira's breath came in short, frantic gasps, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she reached for her phone.
