A Cold Grip

Mira's hands trembled slightly as she continued to click away at her computer, trying to focus on the mountain of work Ethan had dumped on her. It had been a long day—hell, a long week—and her eyes were beginning to blur from exhaustion. It felt like her to-do list was never-ending, and the clock had already passed midnight. Her body ached from sitting in the same position for hours, but she couldn't leave. Ethan had given her an overwhelming amount of tasks, all demanding near-perfection. Her brain was beginning to fog with fatigue.

Just as she was about to give in to the weight of it all, she heard a voice that cut through her concentration like a breath of fresh air.

"Well, well, well," Adam's voice came from behind her, his tone playful and light. "I see you're still alive, Mira. Thought maybe the mountain of paperwork finally got to you."

Mira turned to face him, grateful for the brief interruption. She managed a smile, though it was a tired one. "Barely," she muttered. "I think I've been working non-stop for the past few days. At this rate, I'll need a vacation by the end of the month."

Adam chuckled, moving a little closer to her desk. "I'm sure the boss doesn't believe in vacations. He probably thinks you'll get better performance by working yourself into the ground."

Mira let out a small laugh at that. "Yeah, I don't think he's the type to care much for taking it easy."

Adam's mischievous grin only widened as he leaned against the desk. "Tell me about it. I mean, I've heard the rumors—Ethan likes to throw people into the deep end and see if they can swim. But look at you, you're doing great," he said with a wink, before adding, "Although I must admit, I don't know how you're still standing after all this."

"I'm getting used to it," Mira said with a soft sigh. "You kind of have to, right?"

"That's the spirit!" Adam replied, nodding approvingly. Then, with a playful smirk, he leaned in a little closer, lowering his voice just enough to be teasing. "But you know, there's a lot of perks to working late like this. Like getting to see the boss in his natural habitat. It's almost like a free show."

Mira blinked in confusion before realizing what he was referring to. She chuckled, though there was a hint of embarrassment in her eyes. "I don't know about a 'show,' but if you like, you can tell me more about how the CEO spends his nights after hours," she said with a teasing smile.

"Oh, trust me, I've seen more than my fair share," Adam joked, glancing toward Ethan's office before looking back at Mira. "Let me tell you, though, if you're interested, I think the man's more interested in his spreadsheets than any kind of social life."

Mira snorted, the sound escaping before she could stop it. She immediately covered her mouth with her hand, but Adam raised his eyebrows in amusement.

"What's so funny?" he asked, leaning closer.

"I don't know," Mira replied, still laughing. "I just— I've never thought about Ethan like that. Like, I always assumed he was all about work."

Adam grinned. "Oh, believe me, there's a lot more to him than that. In fact, I'd bet he's the type to spend his free time overthinking business plans instead of doing something normal."

Mira's laughter died down, but she couldn't help the warmth that spread across her face at the lightness of their conversation. It was rare for her to feel this carefree at work. Adam had a charm about him that made everything feel a little more fun. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and grinned.

"Well, I don't know about you, but I definitely could use a break from spreadsheets," she said with a wink. "Maybe you can help me find something a little more... exciting for once."
