Beomgyu woke up to an empty house, Yeonjun nowhere in sight. A little disappointed, he stretched, hoping his morning routine would chase away the strange sadness that had lingered since he opened his eyes. But as he glanced down at his ankle, his heart dropped. The delicate butterfly charm, gifted by his mother, was missing from his anklet.
Panicking, he frantically began searching, his hands trembling as he lifted the bedcovers, checked the floor, and rummaged through his sheets. "No… please, no!" he whispered desperately, feeling his eyes fill with tears. "Where are you, Mom? Where’s the butterfly?" He pressed a hand to his chest, struggling to breathe as waves of worry and sadness washed over him. Eventually, exhausted and heartbroken, he slumped down in the corner, hugging his knees and letting the tears fall freely.
A few hours later, the front door creaked open. Yeonjun stepped inside, his face lighting up at the thought of seeing Beomgyu. “Gyu, I’m home!” he called cheerfully, but his smile faded when he saw Beomgyu huddled in the corner, looking utterly devastated.
“Gyu?” Yeonjun rushed to his side, kneeling beside him and placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Hey, what’s wrong? Did something happen?”
Beomgyu barely looked up, a fresh tear sliding down his cheek. He lifted his ankle slightly, letting Yeonjun see the chain hanging empty on his anklet.
“The butterfly… it’s gone,” Beomgyu whispered, his voice choked with emotion. “It was the last thing I had from my mom. I’ve lost it… it’s like I’ve lost her all over again.” His voice broke, and he covered his face, shoulders shaking.
Yeonjun’s heart ached seeing him like this. Wrapping an arm around Beomgyu, he whispered, “Hey, hey… don’t cry. We’re going to find it, I promise. That butterfly isn’t going anywhere, okay? We’ll look everywhere until we find it.”
Beomgyu looked up at him, his gaze filled with a faint hope. “Do you think we can?”
“I know we can,” Yeonjun replied, giving him an encouraging smile. “Come on, let’s get up and look together. I’m not leaving your side until we find it.”
With Yeonjun’s comforting words, Beomgyu mustered the strength to stand, and they began their search. They scoured the living room first, checking every corner, cushion, and rug. With each place that turned up empty, Beomgyu’s face fell a little more.
Yeonjun squeezed his hand gently. “Don’t worry, Gyu. We’ll find it.”
As they moved to the kitchen, Beomgyu sighed, glancing around the floor one last time. “It just… it feels like a part of her is missing, Yeonjun. She gave me that charm to remind me she’s always with me.”
Yeonjun looked at him, pausing the search to give him a reassuring smile. “Your mom’s always with you, charm or not. But I know how much this means to you, so we won’t stop until we find it.”
Finally, they reached the bedroom. Yeonjun’s gaze scanned every inch of the room until, finally, something silver caught his eye on the bed. “Gyu…” he said softly, a smile spreading across his face. “I found it.”
Beomgyu’s eyes lit up as he rushed over, his hands trembling as he took the butterfly charm from Yeonjun’s hand. Tears filled his eyes again, but this time, they were tears of relief. "Thank you, Yeonjun. You don’t know how much this means to me."
Yeonjun gently took Beomgyu’s ankle and reattached the charm, making sure it was secure. “There you go,” he said softly, looking up at him with a warm smile. “Good as new.”
Beomgyu’s smile widened, and without thinking, he threw his arms around Yeonjun, hugging him tightly. “You’re amazing… Thank you so much.”
Yeonjun chuckled, returning the hug just as tightly. “Anything for you, Gyu. I’d search the whole world if it meant seeing you smile.”
At that moment, Yeonjun’s stomach gave a loud growl, breaking the emotional silence. He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “Uh… I guess someone’s a little hungry.”
Beomgyu laughed too, feeling the weight of his worry lifting. "Alright, alright. Let me make you something."
Yeonjun grinned, watching Beomgyu walk toward the kitchen, his anklet giving a soft ding ding ding with every step. Beomgyu began preparing a simple but hearty meal, humming softly to himself as he worked. Yeonjun, with a playful smirk, grabbed a basketball and headed out to the backyard to shoot some hoops while he waited.
After a few minutes, Beomgyu’s voice called out, “Yeonjun! Food’s ready!”
Yeonjun set the ball aside and jogged back inside, sitting across from Beomgyu at the table. They shared a quiet, peaceful meal together, the events of the morning already feeling like a distant memory. Beomgyu looked up, catching Yeonjun’s gaze, and his heart warmed, a soft smile spreading across his face.
As they ate, Yeonjun looked at him thoughtfully. “You know, Gyu… your mom would be proud of you.”
Beomgyu’s eyes softened, and he glanced down, a small smile playing on his lips. “You really think so?”
“I know so.” Yeonjun reached across the table, taking Beomgyu’s hand. “And I’m proud of you, too. Every single day.”
Beomgyu blushed, squeezing Yeonjun’s hand. “Thank you… for everything.” He glanced at his anklet, the butterfly charm gleaming softly. “And thank you for helping me find her again.”
Yeonjun smiled, his thumb brushing over Beomgyu’s hand. “I’ll always be here for you, Gyu. No matter what.”
As the day turned to evening, the two of them stayed close, savoring the peace and love between them, knowing they had each other’s backs through thick and thin.
