The hum of the building filled the room as Topaz stood by the window, her silhouette outlined by the city lights below. Her gaze seemed lost in the distance, her reflection blurred but striking, her face a mask of silent turmoil. You approached her, hesitating, studying the rigid line of her shoulders and the way her hands clenched and unclenched at her sides.
She had called you here, her message sharp and devoid of warmth. You’d expected something important, but nothing could’ve prepared you for what she was about to say. You could already sense the tension—words held back, emotions hidden behind her usual stoic composure. And though you both stood only a few feet apart, she felt miles away.
"I don’t think we should do this anymore..." she murmured, her voice quiet but steady, as if each word was a decision she had already made. She didn’t look at you, her eyes fixed on the sprawling skyline.
Her reluctance to label what you had as love was always present, like an invisible wall between you two. Yet, you couldn’t ignore how real it felt—the moments spent together, the shared silence that spoke louder than words, and the trust built through every challenge faced side by side. To you, the connection was undeniable, something rare and significant. You had come to believe in it wholeheartedly, even if she couldn’t bring herself to name it.
"But it means something, doesn’t it?" you said, the weight of her silence pressing down on you, the unspoken words hanging thick in the air. You had always been the one to confront these uncomfortable truths, to face them head-on. Running from it felt wrong, even if staying hurt.
Topaz finally turned, her eyes meeting yours, shadowed but unwavering. There was something in her gaze—fear, hesitation, a vulnerability she rarely showed. You could see it, the struggle she kept hidden, the fear of how naming this could change everything, maybe even weaken her control over it.
"It’s not that simple," she whispered, her voice tight. "If we label this, if we give it a name, it changes things. And I don’t know if I’m ready for that." Her gaze fell to the floor, her composure wavering for just a moment. "I can’t risk… losing myself."
You took a step closer, hoping your proximity would bridge the distance that her words had created. "Running from it doesn’t make it easier," you said softly. "If we pretend it doesn’t matter, we’re only hurting ourselves more."
The truth settled between you, raw and unyielding, but even as you reached for her, she seemed to slip further away, lost in her own internal battle. You wanted to hold her, to pull her into the honesty of the moment, to show her that whatever she feared, you would face it with her.
But instead, she turned back to the window, her reflection now a painful reminder of the wall she kept up. The light from the setting sun cast long, fractured shadows across the room, making her appear both near and distant. And as silence filled the space between you once more, you felt the slow ache of words left unsaid, of possibilities fading.
In that moment, you understood. She wasn’t rejecting you; she was rejecting what could make her feel weak, vulnerable. But as you stood beside her, two people bound by something neither could fully understand nor define, you couldn’t shake the feeling that this unspoken love, though it tore at you, was worth the pain.
And so, you stayed there, silent and hurting, hoping that one day, she might let go of her fear long enough to see you for what you truly were—a person willing to face whatever came next, as long as it meant standing by her side.
