After Dr. Ratio's shocking announcement at Intelligentsia Guild, the buzz of his marriage spread quickly through, rippling outward to every corner of the academic universe. It wasn’t long before whispers of his personal life reached his disciples and students, sparking a flurry of questions and uncontainable curiosity. For someone who had always prided himself on his intellectual supremacy and impenetrable exterior, the reveal of his mysterious spouse had become the talk of the town.
The next morning, Ratio entered his lecture hall to find an unusual atmosphere. His students, normally respectful and diligent, were murmuring amongst themselves in hushed tones. A few raised their hands before the class even began, eager to voice the questions that had been burning in their minds since.
"Dr. Ratio," one student ventured, their voice trembling with excitement, "Is it true? Are you really married? To someone... who isn't a scholar?"
Ratio’s eyes narrowed as he swept his gaze across the room. His usual confident, even slightly smug, demeanor remained, but there was a subtle flicker of irritation in his gaze. He had anticipated this. Of course, his students, always so hungry for knowledge and intrigue, would be obsessed with his personal life now that it was out in the open.
"Yes," he said, his tone as sharp as ever. "It is true. I am married. And no, my spouse is not a scholar. But that hardly diminishes their intellectual merit."
The room went quiet as students exchanged curious glances. Some were eager to press further, while others were too intimidated to ask.
"Then... what do they do?" another voice asked cautiously. "How did someone like you find a partner who isn’t—well, you?"
The question hung in the air, almost daring Ratio to respond.
Ratio's lips curled into a faint, condescending smile. He crossed his arms, his posture unyielding. "I don’t see how that is any of your concern," he replied coldly. "My spouse possesses an intellect far beyond your understanding. They see potential where others see only weakness. They have chosen me, and that is enough."
A few more questions came, but Ratio dismissed them with a few terse replies. His usual air of confidence returned, but something about the way he spoke seemed… different. There was a sense of pride, but it wasn’t the pride of a man who had earned his accomplishments. It was the pride of a man who had discovered a rare treasure, something valuable in a world that only valued intellect. And perhaps, for the first time in his life, Ratio allowed himself to experience the humbling realization that love—true connection—was more than just knowledge.
Later that afternoon, as Ratio continued his rounds in the guild’s vast halls, he spotted you. His heart skipped a beat—despite the storm of questions and expectations that still hung over him, there you were, a living embodiment of the “real world” knowledge that had fascinated him so. His eyes softened as you approached, a small smirk playing on his lips. He was relieved to see you—your presence felt like an anchor in the chaos.
"You," he said, his voice low but carrying a hint of affection, "You must be enjoying this, hmm? Watching the spectacle unfold."
You raised an eyebrow, a playful glint in your eye. "You could say I’m intrigued. I never thought I’d see the day when the great Dr. Ratio would leave his students speechless with something other than his lectures."
Ratio chuckled softly, though it wasn’t entirely without a trace of smugness. "I trust you’ve been enjoying the attention," he said, his tone still slightly teasing. "Though I must say, it seems that the concept of mystery is one they cannot seem to grasp."
You stepped closer, your smile softening, and looked up at him with understanding. "They’re fascinated. Not just by the mystery of who you married, but by the fact that someone who always seemed so distant… let someone in. I think they’re still processing the idea that you, of all people, could love."
Ratio’s face hardened slightly at the mention of "love," but there was no anger—only a quiet reflection. "Love is a form of intelligence, too," he murmured. "Perhaps the greatest one."
You reached out, lightly touching his arm, and he looked down at you, eyes softening further.
"They’ll get used to it," you said with a reassuring smile. "And in time, they’ll see why I chose you."
Ratio met your gaze for a long moment, and then, his lips curled into a rare, genuine smile. "Indeed. Let them wonder."
