Aventurine’s smile, that usual mask of effortless charm, has a slight crack tonight. You see it in his eyes—those striking magenta and cyan hues are dimmer, shadows gathering beneath their vibrant surface. He’s good at concealing his worries, of course; his entire life has been about projecting an aura of confidence and poise. But tonight, his laughter doesn’t carry its usual light, and his shoulders are subtly slouched under the weight he’s so carefully tried to disguise. It doesn’t take a gamble to see it. Something is eating at him.
When he notices you watching him, Aventurine straightens, flashing you one of his playful grins. "Caught me staring, have you?" he teases, trying to distract, to steer the focus back to anything but his own troubles.
You give him a knowing look, stepping closer. "Aventurine, I’m not buying it," you say softly. "Tell me what’s really going on. You don’t have to go through this alone."
His smirk falters for a moment, but he keeps up his facade. "What, me? I’m fine." He waves a gloved hand, pretending to brush it off. "Just the usual IPC drudgery, you know. A couple of numbers didn’t quite hit the mark, but nothing I can’t handle."
You tilt your head, unconvinced, and cross your arms. "Aventurine. I can see through that mask you wear. You don’t have to pretend with me."
He chuckles, a little helplessly, and finally lets out a long sigh. "Fine. Maybe… maybe there’s something," he admits, his voice softer now. "It’s just… there are days where I feel like I’m playing a game I can’t win, even when the stakes are in my favor." He looks away, gaze distant. "Sometimes it feels like no matter what I do, there’s no escaping the risks, the… emptiness."
Without missing a beat, you step forward and take his hand, squeezing it. "You listen to me, Aventurine," you say, voice steady. "Whatever weight you’re carrying, I’m here to help you carry it. You are not alone in this. You don’t need to keep up this ‘perfect strategist’ act with me, because I love every part of you—even the parts you think you need to hide."
He blinks, his confident exterior finally giving way to a glimmer of vulnerability. "You’re… you’re really something, you know that?"
With a soft smile, you reach up, cupping his face, your thumbs tracing gentle circles along his cheeks. "I’m going to kill every single ounce of sadness in you, Aventurine. If I have to drown it in love, I’ll do that. Every doubt, every shadow—I’m here, and I’m not letting go. You mean the world to me."
For a moment, he looks like he might resist, but then he lets out a shaky breath and leans into your embrace, his arms coming around you tightly. In that silence, you can feel the tension melting from his body, his grip on you the only thing anchoring him as he allows himself to be vulnerable.
"Thank you," he whispers, voice barely audible against your shoulder. "I… I don’t deserve this, but thank you."
You pull back just enough to look him in the eyes, filled with warmth. "You deserve every ounce of love, Aventurine. You deserve to be happy, too."
And as his hand finds yours, entwining your fingers together, you know he finally believes it—even if just a little.
