The bustling streets of Penacony gleamed under a thousand neon signs, the atmosphere alive with chatter, laughter, and the occasional clink of gambling chips. Tonight, you had reluctantly joined Aventurine at one of his favorite haunts—a ritzy casino tucked away in the heart of the city. The plan was to enjoy the night and avoid his teasing as much as possible.
What you hadn’t accounted for, however, was Aventurine’s reaction to the new addition on your face.
You nervously adjusted the glasses perched on your nose, the unfamiliar weight still odd to you. "I told you not to make a big deal out of it." you said, already regretting your decision to mention it at all.
But Aventurine had other plans.
As he turned to face you, his eyes gleamed with a mix of mischief and curiosity as he took in your appearance. His ever-present enigmatic smile widened, though this time, there was something softer, more intrigued in his expression.
“Well, well,” he drawled, adjusting his own glasses. “It seems someone’s trying to rival me in sophistication tonight.”
“It’s just glasses, Aventurine.” you replied, flustered by the way his gaze lingered.
“Just glasses?” He stepped closer, his movements fluid and deliberate, like a card shark about to make his play. "My dear, the right accessory can change everything. Let me have a look."
Before you could protest, his gloved hand reached out, his fingers lightly brushing the frame of your glasses as he tilted your chin upward. His touch was gentle, his scrutiny intense. It wasn’t just teasing this time—he seemed genuinely captivated.
“They suit you,” he finally said, his voice quieter than usual, the playful edge giving way to something more sincere. “They make you look... clever.”
You raised an eyebrow, trying to gauge whether he was mocking you, but his smile was devoid of its usual slyness.
“You think I didn’t look clever before?” you teased, attempting to deflect the odd warmth rising in your chest.
Aventurine chuckled, the sound rich and velvety. “Oh, you’ve always been clever. But now you’ve added a touch of intrigue to it. Mysterious. Scholarly. Just the sort of look to make someone like me weak in the knees.”
You couldn’t help but laugh, rolling your eyes at his dramatics. "Right, because you’re known for your subtlety."
“Guilty as charged,” he admitted, taking a step back and offering a mock bow. "But don’t think for a moment I’m letting you out of my sight tonight. Glasses or not, someone might try to steal you away.”
“Because of the glasses?”
“Because of you,” he replied, his tone genuine enough to leave you momentarily speechless. Then, just as quickly, his teasing smirk returned. “But yes, also the glasses. They’re quite fetching.”
The rest of the evening passed with Aventurine finding every opportunity to compliment—or lightly jest about—your new look. Yet beneath the humor, there was a warmth in his gaze that stayed with you, a reminder that Aventurine’s affections, though often veiled in theatrics, were as real as the glittering stars above Penacony.
