Aventurine was accustomed to being the one with all the answers, the one who held all the cards in every game he played. The thrill of controlling the stakes was a constant undercurrent in his life, and he wore it well. But tonight, things were... different.
In the dim glow of the upscale restaurant you’d booked—a place so exclusive it didn’t even appear on any of the usual IPC databases—Aventurine adjusted his hat with a slight smirk. He wasn’t one to be intimidated by luxury; in fact, he lived for it. But when he saw the sheer extravagance of the evening you had planned, he raised a brow.
“I know what you’re thinking,” you said with a playful glint in your eye as the maître d' pulled out a chair for Aventurine, “but tonight is my treat.”
“Oh? Are you telling me that I don’t get to gamble on tonight’s festivities?” he replied, leaning back with an easy grin. “Now, that’s a first. I’ll admit you’ve piqued my curiosity.”
You smiled, pouring him a glass of wine before taking a seat across from him. “Consider it a... reversal of roles. I don’t let you spend anything on me, remember?”
That was true. He’d noticed it early on, of course—any hint of his wallet, and you’d already be two steps ahead, buying whatever was needed, arranging the details before he even thought to do so. It was… refreshing, strange, and if he were honest, a little thrilling. Aventurine was so used to managing everything in his world, to being the one who held the purse strings, that having someone else sweep him off his feet was a luxury in itself.
He smirked as he lifted the glass, watching the light play off its ruby depths. “I suppose even I am allowed to indulge every now and then.”
Later, as you left the restaurant, you laced your arm through his and guided him to the waiting car—an elegantly restored vintage model you knew he would appreciate. The look on his face as he slid into the passenger seat was priceless; his usual calm was interrupted by genuine surprise. But he quickly masked it with a grin, ever the charmer.
“You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you?” he asked as you took the wheel. “I didn’t expect this level of detail.”
“For you? Always.” you replied with a playful wink, shifting the car into gear.
The two of you spent the drive exchanging stories—his tales of daring investments, and yours of adventures growing up in a world of privilege. While Aventurine typically loved to steer conversations, tonight, he let you take the lead. His eyes gleamed in the shadows as he listened, a rare look of contentment gracing his features.
When you finally arrived at your penthouse, Aventurine let out an appreciative whistle. The place was just as opulent as he expected: art-lined walls, panoramic views, and, of course, a personal lounge where a lavish dessert display awaited. He took in the scene with an impressed nod.
“So, I’m guessing you won’t let me pay you back for this, either?” he teased, wandering over to examine a particularly intricate sculpture.
“Absolutely not,” you said firmly, guiding him toward the lounge area. “Tonight, you’re the one being pampered.”
Aventurine chuckled, a rich, low sound that you’d come to adore. “You’re a rare find, you know that? Most people like the idea of letting me play the provider. But you—well, you’re impossible to pin down.”
“Maybe that’s what keeps you around.” you replied lightly, though your gaze softened as you looked at him.
He sighed, his expression shifting to something more vulnerable as he looked down at his drink. “It’s nice. You might even say I enjoy letting go of control, at least for a night.”
You sat beside him, placing a hand over his. “Then let tonight be just for you. You don’t need to prove anything. Not to me.”
Aventurine didn’t reply immediately. Instead, he leaned back, allowing himself to relax fully. His fingers found yours, intertwining them with a gentleness you rarely saw from him. In this space, surrounded by warmth and laughter, you caught a glimpse of the man behind the masks.
As the night stretched on, filled with laughter and stories, he allowed himself to indulge in the simple pleasures—without planning or strategizing. Here, in your world, where he didn’t have to guard his heart, Aventurine found something more valuable than any gamble he’d ever placed. And as dawn broke through the penthouse windows, he knew, without a doubt, that this was a game he’d gladly lose.
