"Tootie, this is a lot," Khi chuckled, holding the balloons and flowers with a smile as Sakari, and his mother, took more pictures of him.

Today was Mekhi's first day of work, and all the women in his life were so excited that they made an extra-large deal about it as if it were his first day of kindergarten. There were balloons, a bouquet and an endless stream of pictures to be taken before he left for his shift.

It was currently 6:05 in the morning, and he was set to leave their apartment at 6:30 so that he'd be extra on time, because he and Kari only lived ten minutes away from the hospital.

It had been a officially two and a half weeks since Mekhi and Sakari had begun their life together in their new apartment. It had been grueling doing all the packing and moving, but it was all worth it despite the boxes they were tiptoeing around all day.

Kari was doing a lot of the unpacking during the day as Khi was back and forth to the hospital doing lots of paperwork and prep for this first week, and she would continue as Khi was working 12 hour shifts three days a week.

"It'll just have to be that, say cheese," she fussed, and he did as told, making his mom laugh.

"Okay, now Tootie, you go pose with him, don't say nothing to me bout no damn bonnet, go smile," Tam pointed, hushing Kari's complaints before she could even make them.

Once everything was finally done, Sakari wrapped her arms around her fiancé's torso, pecking his lips repeatedly. "Have a great first day, baby. I'm so proud of you," she pouted.

Her pride, as well as everyone else's wasn't misplaced. Everyone knew how much Khi struggled with his education toward the end of it. There were days when he contemplated quitting, starting over and choosing a completely different major but on those days, Sakari was there. She encouraged him, she helped him study and practice and she made sure he didn't give up on himself. She and everyone else knew that Khi had wanted this for so long, even on his worst days.

He was thankful, and he was proud of himself as well. He passed his NCLEX exam with flying colors and was about to start in one of his top three hospitals. Thirteen-year-old Mekhi wouldn't be able to believe this.

"Thank you, my love," he grinned, kissing her again in thanks with a steady hand on her lower back. "And thank you for packing food like I'm going off to war and you never gon' see me again," he teased, making her laugh.

He had told her she didn't need to pack his lunch and snacks for work. She would soon be starting her own full-time job, and he didn't want her to be exhausted just so he could have food.

But she had insisted. She was enjoying taking care of him in this way. Plus, they both had a terrible habit of eating out when there was food to cook at home. She called it 'holding each other accountable', knowing they'd most likely break that habit soon.
