Carter felt like her head was about to burst, but she was sure she hadn't heard him wrong. "What?” she snapped, blinking wildly as she tried to sit up. Paul tried to push her back to lie down but she was having none of it, she grabbed Paul’s hand quickly, “you cannot tell Sam.” she stated, her eyes wide as her grip on his hand tightened. 

Paul frowned, “what? What do you mean ‘not tell Sam’?” he scoffed, “Carter, this could put each and every one of us in danger, we don't know what this creature will be…” he argued but carter simply shook her head, “exactly, we do not know what it is and Sam will not take any risks. He will kill it first and ask questions later.” 

Paul gave her an uncertain look, hesitant to agree. Carter leaned forward, “Paul, please. You cannot tell him. I know he is your alpha…” 

Paul's voice was laced with resignation. “...but you are my imprint…” he muttered softly, almost to himself, as if the admission weighed heavily on him. His gaze flickered to the ground, then back to her, determination and conflict swirling in his eyes. “I will not tell him. But when—because he will find out eventually—when he finds out, I cannot assure you that I will not support him.”

The unspoken promise hung in the air, a testament to his loyalty, bound by forces neither of them could control.

Carter felt her heart deflate a little at his words, but she understood where he was coming from, she nodded, “I understand, I would not force you to take my side if it is not what you agree with. Only if you do the same for me.” 

Paul looked away, nodding slowly, uncertainly before he looked back up at her although he did not say anything. 

Her attention shifted to her oldest friends, “and you two?” she asked, “Are you alright?” Jayden still held the frozen bag over his head but he gave her a large grin, “never better actually,” he said, wincing afterwards as Carer gave him a look signalling she didn’t believe any of his crap. 

Her eyes shifted to Vera, “your parents? Wouldn't they be looking for you both? Do they even know you’re missing?” Vera chuckled and shook her head, “you see we were already on our way to Forks when we were basically abducted.” she told her and Carter frowned. 

“On your way here? Why?” she asked and Vera grinned, “well, this was technically supposed to be a surprise, but considering none of it went as planned, we might as well tell you… we got admissions in the local community college here,” she said and Carter gasped, “oh my god, you're moving to Forks?” she asked, and Jayden nodded, “just in time as well, I suppose considering what happened just a few hours ago.” 

Carter sighed, “We have a lot to catch up on.” she muttered and Vera gave her a look as her eyes shifted to Paul, “clearly.”

Carter smiled and rolled her eyes as she threw off her blankets, “where will you guys be staying?” she asked and the redhead huffed, “Some apartment mom and dad bought for us.”

Carter nodded, “Well then, I guess I'll catch you guys later. You should settle in and it seems I have some things to take care of as well. Call me if you need anything.”
