Carter sighed as she walked into the Uley cabin, her feet still sore from the heels she had worn the day before. Plus, she wasn’t so excited about what she knew would happen today.

Jacob would get an earful from Sam for the mess he had made yesterday, and for everything else the boy had done.

However, when she walked in with Paul a few steps behind her, she was surprised at how silent the cabin was. There was a thick air of tension in the room and her eyes fell on Jacob who sat on the couch, staring directly at the kitchen counter. Carter followed his line of sight and raised her eyebrows, he was staring at his imprint.

Carter walked into the kitchen, Emily was pulling a fresh batch of muffins out of the oven, and Theo stood over the sink, washing a few dishes. She had a small, serene smile that Carter thought was kind of creepy, but she approached the blonde nonetheless.

She nudged the girl with her shoulder, picking up a dish she had just washed and wiping it clean, “why does it look like he’s gonna burn holes into the back of your head?” she asked as lowly as possible, knowing that the boy was listening.

Theo simply smiled and shrugged, “silent treatment,” she mumbled as Jacob let out a loud, exaggerated sigh behind them and got off the couch. Carter smirked back, moving away from the two as the younger boy came to stand by Theo’s side.

She leaned against the counter, watching the two quietly as Emily joined her side, passing her a large muffin that she bit into quickly. Jacob turned to glare at the two girls over his shoulder, hinting at his desire for some privacy and Carter shrugged, pushing herself off the counter.

She brushed past the pair, grabbing Jacob by the back of his neck she tugged him down to her level, “You hurt her one more time and I will break your bones, over and over again without giving you a chance to heal. Last chance, jakey.” she whispered, giving him a sweet smile before she let him go.

She walked out the back, a genuine smile taking over her face as she watched Paul spar with Jared. She watched her imprint throw Jared over his shoulder, the older boy groaning as she walked over to Embry. She clapped him on the back before pulling him along, “come on,” she sighed, “time for patrol.”

Embry groaned in annoyance as he followed her, dragging his feet. They both walked into the forest, shifting as soon as the cabin was out of sight.

The two trudged along their border, stopping occasionally if they heard a leaf crunch or branch snap, although it only always seemed to be a squirrel or rabbit.

Carter huffed slightly, trudging along the river. Her patrol with embry always seemed to be the one where she had some peace and quiet. If she were with Jared, he would irritate the fuck out of her and tease her endlessly like the self-proclaimed older brother he was. She had also grown tired of Jacob's self-pity and moaning. Quil never gave up a chance to talk her ear off and she'd consider it a miracle if she ever managed to complete her patrol with Paul on time. While her patrol with Sam was also quiet, the older man's tense muscles and frown rarely made Carter relax.

Her shift with Leah was one where she realized the girl could truly be herself around Carter. So their shifts together seemed to be less patrol and more therapy sessions, but Carter was glad Leah could see her as a close enough friend to share her problems with her.
