Chapter 41: The Deepening Storm
The hospital hallways seemed endless as Taehyung and Jennie walked in silence, tension thick between them. The fear gnawed at Jennie, her hand instinctively protecting her stomach as they waited in the sterile, too-bright waiting room.
Finally, Dr. Lee appeared, holding a clipboard, his expression grim. “Miss Kim, Mr. Kim, thank you for coming so quickly.”
Taehyung nodded, his face a mix of dread and urgency. “Please, just tell us what’s happening. How is Jennie? How’s our baby?”
Dr. Lee glanced down at his notes, sighing. “Jennie, your test results show traces of a compound that has been building up in your system. It’s not lethal in small doses, but long-term exposure could be harmful, especially during pregnancy. We need to flush it out of your body as soon as possible.”
Jennie’s hand shook as she gripped Taehyung’s. “But will… will the baby be okay?”
Dr. Lee paused, choosing his words carefully. “It’s hard to say right now. We’ll monitor closely and provide treatment to mitigate the effects, but there’s no guarantee. We need to know if there’s been a specific pattern to this exposure. Has someone been consistently around you, maybe preparing your meals or drinks?”
Jennie’s gaze fell, her heart heavy as she whispered, “Jimin… He’s my landlord and has been taking care of me since I arrived in Russia. I trusted him completely…”
Taehyung’s fists clenched. A storm brewed within him, mixing fury with a sickening guilt. He had left Jennie vulnerable and trusted someone else with her safety. And Jimin—a person he never questioned—had betrayed that trust in the most unimaginable way.
“Doctor, please do everything you can,” Taehyung pleaded, his voice rough with emotion. “We’ll make sure Jennie’s safe from here on.”

Later, in the quiet of her hospital room, Jennie lay in the dim light, gazing out at the rainy night beyond the window. Taehyung sat beside her, his hand resting on hers, silently vowing to keep her safe from this moment forward.
“I can’t believe Jimin would do something like this,” Jennie whispered, her voice cracking. “I thought he was my friend, Taehyung… I thought I was safe with him.”
Taehyung pulled her close, feeling the weight of her sorrow press against his own heart. “I should never have left you alone, Jennie. I’m so sorry.”
She leaned her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes as tears slipped down her cheeks. “I don’t know what’s real anymore. I thought I was starting a new chapter, but now… everything feels tainted.”
He brushed a thumb over her cheek, his eyes soft but resolute. “We’ll get through this, Jennie. I’ll stay by your side no matter what.”

Meanwhile, Back in Korea…
Hae-in stayed by Jisoo’s side, his presence a quiet anchor amidst the storm raging in her mind. She drifted in and out of restless sleep, the weight of her despair heavy on her heart. The darkness she had tried to bury for so long had finally broken free, swallowing her hope and dreams.
As she stirred awake, she found Hae-in sitting beside her, his gaze steady and calm.
“You stayed?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Hae-in nodded. “Of course. You’re not alone, Jisoo. And you don’t need to carry this burden by yourself.”
She looked away, bitterness tinged in her expression. “I don’t even know why I’m here anymore, Hae-in. I lost everything. Taehyung… my future… even the hope of having a child.”
Hae-in’s hand gently covered hers. “I know you’re hurting. And you have every reason to be. But sometimes, life gives us second chances, even when we don’t want them.”
Jisoo shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. “A second chance at what? At being alone? At watching the one person I love live a life without me?”
Hae-in’s gaze softened, and he reached up to wipe a tear from her cheek. “Maybe… a second chance to find a reason to live for yourself, not for anyone else.”

Back in Russia…
Days passed in a blur, with Jennie returning home under the watchful eye of Taehyung. She was weak, and the toll of the poison lingered, leaving her fatigued and vulnerable. Taehyung took on the role of caretaker, cooking her meals, checking in on her every moment, staying by her side. But despite his warmth and reassurance, Jennie felt a distance growing between them—one she couldn’t quite bridge.
One evening, as Taehyung prepared dinner, Jennie finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Tae… if something happens, if the baby isn’t okay… promise me you won’t hate me.”
Taehyung turned to her, his expression pained. He crossed the room and took her hands, pressing them to his heart. “Jennie, nothing could ever make me hate you. You’re the love of my life, and this baby… it’s our baby, no matter what happens.”
Her eyes welled with tears, and she held onto him, feeling both the comfort and the fear that had settled in her heart.
