THE MORNING AIR WAS CRISP AND FRESH AS DIANA WOKE TO THE SOFT LIGHT streaming through the curtains of her room. the events of the previous evening were still fresh in her mind, like a melody she couldn't stop humming. felix. he had been so open, so genuine, and the first in a long time, diana had felt like she wasn't living in a world of expectation and duty.
she stretched, feeling the weight of the day ahead slowly settling in her chest. today would be different. she had promised felix she would show him something special, something that would be a true escape from the world they both knew so well. and as much as diana enjoyed the comfort of her life in the royal bubble, she couldn't deny that there were moments she longed for more. moments where she could just exist without the pressure of who she was suppose to be.
diana glanced at the clock, it was still early, but she didn't want to waste any more time. she needed to see felix again. the idea of spending the day with him filled her with a warmth she wasn't ready to admit, but it was undeniable. after everything, after all the facades, he had made her feel something real. something she hadn't felt in ages.
after quickly getting dressed and pulling her hair into a loose braid, she left her room and made her way down the hallway, her footsteps soft on the polished floors. the place felt quieter in the early morning, the usual hum of activity still far away, she liked it that way. it allowed her to think without the looming presence of her royal responsibilities.
once in the kitchen, diana found her grandmother, elizaebth, having her morning tea. there was a brief moment of hesitation before diana approached her. her granny had always been a figure of strength and authority in her life, but today, diana didn't want to discuss royal matters. she didn't want to talk about anything that felt heavy.
"good morning, granny." diana said, her voice polite but softer than usual.
the queen smiled up at her, the warmth in her eyes almost making diana's heart ache. "good morning, diana. you look...happy today." there was an inquisitive glint in her eyes as she studied her granddaughter, no doubt sensing diana's demeanour.
diana hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should say something about felix. but instead, she chose to nod, letting the moment pass. "i have a little outing planned for today," she said, causally. "it's just a small thing. nothing important."
the older lady raised an eyebrow, but her smile didn't falter. "you deserve a day of peace, diana. i'm glad to see you getting out for awhile."
diana felt a weight lift from her shoulders at her grandmothers words. it was rare that she received such genuine support, and ever rarer that her family seemed to understand her need for quiet moments like this.
"i won't be long," diana promised, already feeling a lightness in her chest as she turns to leave.
as she walked back to her room, her thoughts drifted back to felix. she found herself wondering about him—how he'd felt after their time together last night, whether he had woken up thinking about the same things. he was so different from the people she was used to. not just because of his fame or the distance between their worlds, but because of the way he made her feel seen, understood.
