AS DIANA SAT IN THE PALACE'S DRESSING ROOM hours before the gala, her heart was a chaotic mixture of anticipation and nerves. she sat perfectly still as her stylist worked on her makeup, applying a soft layer of blush that brought out the natural flush already on her cheeks. her usual preparations felt different tonight. her thoughts kept drifting to the invitation she'd slipped, almost impulsively, into felix's hotel suite.
the stylist stepped back and admired her work. "you look breathtaking tonight, your highness. the guests will be captivated."
diana offered a polite smile, though her mind was only half-present. a part of her felt the weight of the evening and the expectations from her family, the public, and the charity she was representing. but a deeper, more personal part of her was consumed with a more thrilling thought: felix would be there. she had no idea how they would manage to exchange even a word, surrounded by such a crowd and with her family watching. still, the promise of even the briefest encounter electrified her.
the palace was in a frenzy of final preparations by the time diana made her way down the grand staircase with her parents. she could hear the faint hum of the orchestra tuning their instruments, and the chandelier lights cast a soft, golden glow across the grand hall.
as diana entered the ballroom on her father's arm, she scanned the crowd without making it obvious. diplomats, high-profile philanthropists, and members of the press dotted the crowd, each dressed impeccably and moving about with the poise that befitted an event of this magnitude. everything around her was polished, refined, and as expected, somewhat predictable. but tonight, there was a crack in that polished exterior—a hidden thrill that only she knew about.
when she finally spotted him, she almost froze. felix stood near the entrance, blending seamlessly with the crowd in a tailored black suit. his blonde hair was neatly styled, yet the softness of his gaze gave him away. she had never seen him in a setting like this, and the sight left her momentarily breathless. she took in the way his eyes scanned the room, lingering for only a split second when they landed on her. a small, private smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, and her heart quickened in response.
her father's voice brought her back to reality. "diana, please make sure to stay by our side during the opening remarks," he said softly, reminding her of the formality of the evening.
"of course, father," she replied, letting her usual poise slip back into place. she moved gracefully, her expression serene, while inside, every nerve felt alive. though she knew she was being watched by dozens of eyes, her focus kept drifting to the young man across the room.
the opening remarks commenced, speeches about the importance of charity and royal duty reverberating through the ballroom. diana smiled politely, clapping at all the appropriate moments, but her mind was far from the words being spoken. she stole glances at felix when she could, noting the way he carried himself—confident, composed, yet undeniably different from the other guests around him. he didn't quite belong in this world of royal formality, but that only made him more captivating.
