THE DAYS FOLLOWING CAMILA'S VIST LEFT DIANA WITH A LINGERING SENSE OF UNEASE, a reminder of the expectations her family held for her and the life they wanted her to lead. the palace, grand and beautiful, had begun to feel more like a cage, each ornate corridor and room a reminder of the path that had been decided for her long before she was even born.

that morning, diana woke early, the soft morning light filtering through her window. she glanced at the clock—barely six—but she was already wide awake. sleep hadn't come easily the night before, her mind restless with thoughts of her future and the strain of pretending she was content with it. she reached for her notebook on her nightstand, flipping to the page where she had started a list of places she wanted to see someday, places she imagined exploring with felix by her side. japan, australia, new york... all far-off dreams she clung to when palace life felt too stifling.

a soft knock on the door interrupted her thoughts, and she looked up to see her mother, kate, stepping inside. kate was already dressed, her hair neatly pinned back, and her expression softened as she saw the weariness in diana's eyes.

"couldn't sleep?" kate asked gently, taking a seat at the foot of the bed.

diana shook her head, offering a faint smile. "just... thinking."

kate studied her for a moment, then reached out and brushed a loose strand of hair from diana's face. "i know things have felt heavy lately, especially with all the... conversations about your future."

"it's more than that, mum," diana admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "it's like everyone has a vision for my life, and i'm just... supposed to go along with it. but i don't feel like i belong in any of it."

kate's gentle expression shifted, a hint of tension forming as she sighed softly. "diana, i know you're fond of... certain people outside our circle. but not everyone understands the responsibilities that come with being royal. sometimes, people with different lives and dreams can pull you away from what's truly important."

diana's smile faded, and she sat up, a spark of defensiveness in her eyes. "are you talking about felix?"

kate hesitated, glancing away before meeting her daughter's gaze. "i just don't want you to lose sight of your duty, diana. your choices affect more than just you. and people like felix... they don't fully understand what you stand to lose."

"but he makes me happy, mum," diana said softly, her voice wavering. "he sees me as more than just a princess. with him, i feel like i can be myself."

kate's expression softened, but her disapproval remained. "i don't doubt that he cares for you, diana. but emotions can be complicated, especially when they interfere with what's best for the family. love is wonderful, but you need to remember your responsibilities, too."

diana looked down, feeling a rush of frustration and hurt. "it feels like you want me to give up everything that makes me happy for the sake of... an image."
