Chapter 9 Silver Love

The morning sunlight went through the small opening of my maroon drapes, landing on my face. My eyes fluttered open upon the light and I lazily entered a sitting position on my bed, rubbing my eyes slightly.

I yawned as I slowly removed my white sheets and stepped on the carpeted floor. My eyes found the clock on the wooden nightstand next to my bed. "9:00 am" I spoke softly. I never was one to be able to sleep in. Even if I were to go to bed at seven in the morning, I probably would not wake up any later than nine.
I let a hand go through my messy hair and exited my room, not bothering to change out of my tank top and blue ocean blue shorts. I slowly went down each step of the wooden stairz. I am so glad it is finally the weekend. For whatever reason, school has been the most exhausting it has ever been. Reasons I concocted was the fact that the exams, that basicaly decided our future, were coming up soon. Then there was the partnership dance with Luke, which was an adventure itself. Not to mention, Ashton being super protective with all the murders that have been occuring. And as much as I hated to admit it, I felt like senioritis may finally creeping in and all thirteen years of education have finally caught up with me.

I sighed as I poured my bowl of frosted flakes cereal and sat at the kitchen table. "Well good morning!" , Cried an elated Ashton who came over and kissed me on the cheek. He wore a black beanie, white tank top and black sweats along with his flip flops that smacked against the floor.  "And a very happy birthday to my favorite sister". He placed his hand upon my scarlet head and rubbed it slightly with a chuckle. He is just lucky I haven't brushed it yet.

"Aren't I your only sister"? I asked, subconsciously fixing my hair. He chuckled as he walked over to the kitchen fixing up his own breakfast. "Exactly, you won by forfeit and an absence of competition" he said with a wink. "Charming" I replied with a sarcastic smile.
He came over to the table, munching on a piece of toast and holding a glass of milk. I raised an eyebrow at his simplistic meal choice, but decided not to educate my elder brother the importance of nutrition. His hazel eyes remained on me as he shook his head in disbelief. "My baby sister, finally at the legal age of eighteen". I gave him a soft smile as he continued. "Just think, now if you screw up you can be trialed as an adult". I rolled my eyes at him. "And I am old enough to legally sue you".

He placed a heart on his chest and gave me an expression of fake pain. "Wow Kat, I thought we had something special. I thought we had that sibling bond where blood was not the only thing that binded us together". I pursed my lips and shrugged, "nah that was just you". Ashton began to pout as I giggled slightly. "I'm only messing with you". He shook his head, "no you said how you felt and I must accept it", he then got up from the table and walked to the kitchen exit. "Perhaps I should just leave you be so that you can be with people who truly matter in your life". I rolled my eyes again. "Ashton, cut the crap and set your ass back down here".

He turned to me with a huge grin and returned to his seat. "Just think, that mouth used to sing Barney songs". I smirked at my brother, "and then I grew up with you". He shrugged, "yeah I suppose I'm not the best influence". We laughed at our conversation as Ashton's eyes went back to me. "Man how time flies". I smiled, "come on, don't get all sentimental on me". He placed a hand through the small amount of dirty blonde hair that escaped his beanie and looked at me, almost as if he was thinking to the old days. Ashton laughed slighlty, "you know me Kat, sentimentality is not my forte". I giggled slightly remembering a young Ashton who threw our mother's twenty year old broach out of our moving vehicle's window because it "looked cheap".

Ashton spoke again, "but there are definitely things that I hold near and dear, and you are one of them". I looked at Ashton in shock. "Wow Ash, if I didn't know any better, I would think I was on my deathbed". His expression remained serious. "Perhaps you are. The old little girl is dying, and the birth of an amazing young woman is in process". I grew teary-eyed and speechless at my brother's words. "Just try not to fuck it up alright", he said with a grin. I chuckled, "sure Ash".

I got up from my chair with my empty bowl and headed to the sink. "So what's the plan exactly?" I asked Ashton as I began washing the bowl. "Well I hired a clown and one of those inflatable bounce houses", he said with a smug expression, "oh and I even invited Queen Elsa to come, hopefully she won't be 'letting it go' in the yard". I gave a sarcastic laugh. "Your funny", I said drying the bowl with a washcloth. "Thanks, I was thinking about going into stand up" he replied with a smile. "That shouldn't be hard, I mean you, yourself, are a joke". He looked at me with a hurt expression. "Maybe I should call Elsa, she could teach you the importance of family, love, and melt your frozen heart".

I giggled as I walked over and playfully smacked his bicep. "Please, we know you have an obsession on The Ice Queen of Disney". He pursed his lips and shrugged, "nah I'm more of a Princess Anna kind of guy". I rolled my eyes, "but seriously, what is the plan for today"? He stood up with his empty glass and dumped the glass in the sink. "Your friends will be here in about," he looked at the clock for clarification, "five and half hours. Did you want to go somewhere". I shrugged somewhere, "eh I think I am cool with being lazy til then, any word on mom"?

Ashton crossed his arms and gave me a sympathetic look, "yeah, sorry Kat, she said she can't make it, but that she sent in a gift". I nodded, "it's fine," I spoke unconvincingly, "she's busy". I avoided meeting Ashton's eyes. We both knew this was bound to occur, it always did, but part of me did want Mom to be here. But I suppose it is either today or my graduation day. "Hey", Ashton spoke rather enthusiastically, "what do you say we be both be couch potatoes and see what movies is on Netflix". I smiled at him. "Sounds great". We walked over to the living room. I grabbed the remote and logged into Netflix. I then turned to a smiling Ashton who was on the couch holding a small colorful box in his hand.

I shook my head in suprise, "Ashton you didn't have to get me anything". He handed me the box and scoffed. "Please, you only turn into an adult and abandon your soul and all values of fun once". I laughed as turned the box over. "You really suck at wrapping" I said analyzing the multiple uses of tape to hide the tears on the paper. "Yeah yeah, just open it before I take it back, it was expensive".

I chuckled at his impatience and began to tear off the multicolored wrapping paper, which I then realized was different wrapping papers put together. After tearing off Ashton's poor excuse for wrapping, my hands held a small box. I opened it and inside revealed a beautiful silver pendant. "Oh my gosh, Ashton, it's beautiful" I said. "Look what's engraved". I looked closer and read the engraving on the pendant. "You may not be my baby sister anymore, but I will always be your older brother. Happy Birthday Kat. Love, Ash".

I looked at him holding back the tears. "Ash.." I simply said as I enveloped him in a hug and placed a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you". He smirked at me, "not bad right"? I chuckled, "you sure know how to ruin a moment. Could you put this on for me"? He nodded and I handed him the necklace, holding my hair to the side and turning my back to him. He placed the pendant around my neck and clapsed it together. I held the cool metal with my hand. "It's perfect" I said giving him another hug. He chuckled and held me tight. The thing was, Ashton and I truly did depend on one another. With the absence of our mom, the disapearence of our father, and the death of Gran Gran, we were all we truly had. We lied there in eachothers embrace for a few minutes until we finally seperated and began arguing on what to watch. Even if Mom wasn't able to make it. I am glad that Ashton is.

So I actually had a hard time writing this chapter. I had multiple ideas on what should be in it, how things should go, where I should end it and blah blah blah.

So I hope you guys still enjoyed it, even though it may be kinda crappy. Next chapter should be the party, unless I have another moment of me questioning everything XD

Don't forget to comment and vote and thank you for sticking with this story. You guys are the best.
