Throughout the game, and the other games afterwards, I had noticed Luke was mostly in the sidelines and often chose not to stand out. He seemed like he was analyzing us. Trying to figure us out. This, in turn, made Calum feel threatened as he would make everything, including who went to the bathroom first, a competition with Luke.
Ashton didn't make the situation any better. He was constanly staring at Luke. Occasionally, asking him questions to decipher the mystery in front of him. My brother was not very subtle as he would ask questions like "when was the last time you banged a chick"? After I punched my brother in the arm for his inappropriate inquiries, I would assure Luke he did not need to disclose such private information.
Luke, however, did not seem bothered by Calum and Ashton's lack of hospitality. He seemed rather amused as he would constanly pull out that infamous smirk and chuckle which would only piss Calum off more and spark more of Ashton's curiousity.
After the fiftieth game of cards against humanity was finished, with Beth being the victor, she sprung from her spot on the couch, and yelled "cake time!" As she pulled me out of my spot and into the kitchen, nearly dislocating my shoulder.
"Is it me or can you actually smell the tension in that room?" Beth asked as soon as we entered the kitchen. She opened the stainless steel fridge that stored the birthday cake whose appearence was supposedly a suprise worth being excited for. At least, that was what Beth claimed.
She set the box containing the cake on the island and I sighed as I went into a cabinet, grabbing paper plates. "Do you think Calum could lay off Luke a bit"? Beth scoffed at my question. "Honey, I think what we are seeing right now is the only level of 'laying off' Calum is capable".
I rolled my eyes as I agreed with the statement and placed the plates on the island. "And Ashton too? God. Luke hasn't even given either of those two a reason to justify such behavior".
Beth shrugged, tearing out a small box of candles. "Well, other than the fact that he has been a total egotistical jack ass since day one". I placed a hand on my hip and raised an eyebrow at my bestfriend. "I take it you aren't a fan either"?
Beth chuckled as she took the number eight and number one candles our of their box, and carefully placed it on my cake, using the cardboard lid of the cake box to conceal the decoration of the cake. "Don't get me wrong", she said maintaining focus on the cake, "if I had the chance, I would totally jump him. But he just seems-I don't know-odd". I folded my arms, "well maybe he is just a little...shy". Beth scoffed, "Kat, there is a bunch of words I could use to describe that leathered Abrecombie model, but I am not sure if 'shy' is one of them".
I took in what she said and nodded. Luke did not seem the timid type. If anything he came off a little cocky. But after our talk yesterday, before rehearsal, I can't help but wonder if what he puts out is truly who he is inside. "Anyways, when did you start getting into him?" Beth asked shutting the lid of then cake box and placing a knife on the island. I scrunched my eyebrows together, "into him"? Beth winked at me with a playful smile. "I mean just this past week all you would do was imitate vomiting whenever you thought of being anywhere near him. Now here you are defending him and inviting him to parties".
I moved a stray hair behind my ear and cleared my throat. "It's nothing, I just think we may have judged him too quickly". Beth placed her hands on the island and leaned forward, eyeing me with a smirk. She tilted her head slightly as she seemed to be looking into my soul. "Did something happen between you two during your little dance rehearsal yesterday"?
I thought back to that moment when after Luke and I finished rehearsing. That moment when my back was to the wall with his hot breath on my face. His sky blue eyes looking me up and down, reading me like a novel wish his lips inching closer to mine. "I knew it"! Beth's voice brought me back to kitchen and I realized I felt a lot warmer than I did moments ago. "Explain. Now." Beth said excited.
