Holland Roden as Katherine "Kat" Irwin

The soft spring breeze ran through my scarlet hair as I exited from daily seven hour confinement. It almost felt like yesterday that I was attending my first day of kindergarden. Yet, here I am, a senior in high school reaching the end of an era. I knew one day I would look back and miss it all. But for now, I was just glad to receive the Vitamin D on my soft pale skin from the sun.

I held my books close as I walked along the sidewalk for my two mile walk home when I heard the familiar voice of my bestfriend. "Kat! Wait up"! Her ponytailed blonde hair whipped around her back as she feverishly sprinted towards me. I figured her basketball practice had just concluded as she wore the uniform that held our school colors of black and navy blue.

"Practice end early?" I asked when she apporached me. She nodded, "Yeah, Coach wasn't feeling well, so she only had us run a few laps aroud the court and dismissed us. Lame". I chuckled at my friends attitude as we walked our route, books on hand. "Wow Beth, that must be the fifth time this month. Is she ok?" I asked tugging my white bookbag on my right shoulder. Beth shrugged, "Not sure. Rumor has it that she's expecting and going through hormonal sickness". "Pregnancy?" I questioned, "isn't Coach Vernn single"? Beth gave me a puerile smile. "Exactly!" , She exclaimed, "There is a bet in the locker room that she and Coach Vincent had a little fling after our game last month". I rolled my eyes at her immaturity. "You guy are so mean. I'm sure she has only been feeling ill".

Beth lightly brushed against my shoulder. "Oh and you and the dancers treat Coach Arma so dang well". I looked at her incredulously. "Hey! In our defense, she treats us like crap! What kind of dance instructor throws a pillow at a student simply because they executed a fuerte incorrectly". "Have you guys figured out why she had the pillow in the first place?" She asked. "Nope", I replied, "there is a theory that Coach sleeps in her office at night because she has no life". "Oh and you say I'm bad!" Beth laughed. "Oh shut up!" I fired back with a light push on her shoulder.

"Are you ladies talking about me"? Beth and I turned back and saw our friend, Calum, in his typical rocker style of black holed skiny jeans, white t-shirt and vans. He had a beautiful smile, and the way the sunlight hit against his tanned skin and raven hair, it was perfection. "Not unless you sleep in a school office due to a lack of social interaction", I retorted. "Dang!" He slapped the palm of his hand against his forehead, "how did you girls know"? I giggled as he walked with us.

I felt Beth's forest green eyes on me with a small grin. She had known about my crush on Calum for years and has constanly pressured me into revealing it to him for years. I simply kept my eyes on the sidewalk as Calum went on. "So how about that Anatomy test? Quite a killer". "I know!" Beth said with annoyance at the mention of the exam, "I swear, none of that material was covered in class". "Yeah it was," I challenged with a smirk, "you were just too busy catching up on your beauty sleep". "What?" Beth exclaimed, "are you accusing me of sleeping in class"? "And snoring" Calum added. Beth went over to him and punched his arm hard as Calum attempted to contain his laughter.

I too found humor in Calum's remark as we crossed the road. The weather outside was beautiful as the flowers bloomed in numerous vibrant colors and the clear sky was a gourgeous soft blue. My white sandals smacked against the concrete walkway and I could feel the soft wind blow on my exposed legs from my matching white shorts. My golden locket swung across my carribean blue tank top as we turned the corner to enter another street.
"No way! Seriously?!" Calum's voice rang. My attention was brought back as Beth answered. "I know! I was suprised too, but Madison came up and apologized to me for what happened last year". I raised an eyebrow, "Really? What possesed her to do that"? "Heck if I know," She said, moving a stray blonde hair passed her ear, "I was shocked myself". "What did you say?" I asked. "I forgave her" she replied, "told her that she actually saved me the trouble of seeing what an asshole Zeke was". I rolled my eyes at the mention of the tabooed name. "I warned you about him. I knew he was an immature player from the get go". She pushed me lightly with a sour look. "Yeah yeah, you were right" , she mumbled, "anyways, I'll see ya guys later". Beth seperated from us as she walked towards her house, but stopped and turned to Calum.

"We're still heading over to your place Saturday, right?" She asked. "Of course!" He answered, "everything has been planned out". "You guys really don't have to go through all this trouble", I said concerned. "Nonsense!" Beth replied, "no way in hell am I letting my bestfriend spend her eighteenth birthday alone"! "My mom said she might be back from her business trip around ten on Saturday. Besides, Ashton is visiting from college. Said he wanted to take a short break, but I'm convinced mom persuaded him to come over for me". Calum shook his head, "Then bring him over! It's no problem. You only turn eighteen once". His smile was hard to deny any request as I saw Beth smirk knowing I was exposed to my weakeness.

"Ok" I smiled at him. "Great!", Beth exclaimed, "later nerds"! She turned and walked to her front porch as Calum and I continued our walk to our neighborhood.

Calum laughed lightly at himself and I looked back at him suspicious. "What"? He simply looked at me and resumed his amused expression. I rolled my eyes at him, "May I ask what is so humorous"? He looked at me and grinned as we turned another corner and entered our neighborhood. "I just love how easily you are pressured into things". I pushed lightly annoyed, "whatever". He laughed again and we stopped in place noticing the Old Golland's home.

The house had been abandoned since John Golland's death twenty years ago. It was dark and depressing with broken windows, old wooden walls, and a rusted fence. The house was the popular spot for teenagers out at night to dare one another to enter the rumored home that witheld Old Golland's ghost. No one ever entered the house though. The closest anyone ever got to it was the yard full of weeds and dead rose bushes. Calum and I always passed the home on our way to and from school but were suprised at what we saw in front of the crippled house. A moving van. Movers were unloading the vehicle carrying a grand piano as they walked up to the lawn.

"Well that's interesting" I said as we stood, staring at the now residented home. "Who in there right mind would move in to that dump"? Calum's curiousity was contagious as I watched the men continue to unload the truck, one carrying a black motorcycle. "Well whoever the sucker is, hopefully they will fix it up. It would be nice for it to have a makeover". "I give them two weeks before they move out", Calum said as he pulled me along to continue our stroll. I looked up at the only nonbroken window and saw a dark shadow. They seemed to be staring at the street, watching all who passed. Could that be the new neighbor? I decided to ignore it as I looked forward. But I could still feel the eyes of the silhouette on my back.

"You ok?" Calum asked. "Um, yeah" I lied feeling uneasy. Calum seemed to take notice but witheld any mention as we stopped at my house. In the front was a rusty red truck that signaled that my older brother, Asthon was home. "Well I'll see you tomorrow" Calum said as he patted my back and began to continue on the sidewalk. "Yeah, see you tomorrow". I said back. I walked up my porch and took out my keys from my white school bag. As I placed the keys through the lock, I turned my attention to Old Golland's house down the street. I could not see it clearly, but I felt like that same shadow was at the window observing the neighborhood, like a vulture. I turned the lock, uneasy, still feeling those same eyes as I entered my sanctuary.
