A few days later, Ch-last was on another mission with N and J when disaster struck. They'd tracked a group of Worker Drones to a remote facility, but as they entered, Ch-last's heart sank. Among the Worker Drones, she spotted a familiar face – Uzi, armed and ready, her eyes narrowing as she recognized Ch-last.
J immediately took aim, but Ch-last stepped between her and Uzi.
"Move, Ch-last," J said, her voice low and dangerous. "This is your last chance."
Ch-last's hand twitched toward her weapon, but she couldn't bring herself to attack Uzi. "J, listen to me. She's not a threat. We can handle this differently."
J scoffed. "Handle it differently? We're Disassembly Drones. Our job is to eliminate threats, not negotiate."
N looked between them, clearly torn. "Maybe... maybe Ch-last is right. We don't have to destroy all of them."
J's glare turned on him. "Are you two really suggesting we betray everything we were built for?"
Ch-last stepped forward, her voice steady. "I'm suggesting that maybe we don't know everything. Maybe there's more to this than just following orders."
Without warning, J raised her weapon and fired. The shot missed Ch-last by inches, blasting a hole in the wall behind her. She turned to see Uzi, frozen with shock.
"Run, Uzi!" Ch-last shouted, and without hesitation, Uzi dashed down the hallway, disappearing into the shadows.
N stepped between J and Ch-last, his face pleading. "Please, J. Don't do this. We're a team."
"Not anymore," J replied coldly. She raised her weapon again, this time aiming directly at Ch-last.
Ch-last braced herself, ready to fight back. But before she could react, N grabbed J's arm, pulling her aim off target. The shot went wide, giving Ch-last the opening she needed.
She bolted down the hallway, following the path Uzi had taken. She could hear J's furious shouts behind her, but she didn't look back. She knew that her time as a Disassembly Drone was over – at least as part of J's squad.
As she caught up to Uzi, she grabbed her arm, pulling her along. "Come on, kid. We're getting out of here."
Uzi looked at her, eyes wide with disbelief. "Are... are you really doing this?"
Ch-last grinned, though her heart was pounding. "Looks like I'm switching sides."
Together, they ran through the facility, dodging blasts and evading security until they reached an abandoned service tunnel that led outside. Once they were safe, they collapsed on the ground, catching their breath.
Uzi looked over at her, her expression softening. "Why did you do it?"
Ch-last shrugged, but there was a warmth in her voice she couldn't hide. "Guess I'm just a sucker for a good fight. And maybe... maybe you're worth it, kid."
Uzi smiled, and for the first time, Ch-last felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be – fighting for something she believed in, with someone she trusted.
As they looked out at the barren landscape, they both knew that a new battle awaited them. But this time, they wouldn't be alone. They had each other – and that was a start.
