A sharp, relentless ringing filled your head, echoing with such intensity it was almost deafening. You instinctively raised a hand to rub your temples, but a sudden, searing pain shot through your right arm, making you wince.
"I wouldn't move if I were you"
When your vision finally steadied, you saw Cedric—looking worse for wear, wrapped in gauze—lying on a bed to your right. Both of you were in the infirmary.
Your heartbeat raced as you strained to remember what had happened to land both of you in the hospital wing.
"What time is it? What happened?" you groaned, still in pain.
"Well, to put it simply, we both took bludgers to the head" he chuckled, sounding strangely upbeat. "As for the time, I'd say about 10:00. I regained consciousness shortly after the incident but you've been passed out since"
"I took a bludger to the head?" you repeated.
Cedric nodded. "From what I remember, I was close to winning the first challenge when I got distracted, and a bludger blindsided me. Madam Pomfrey said you rushed onto the field, and just as you got there, another rogue bludger hit you." He ran a hand through his messy hair and reached for his glass of water. As he spoke, fragments of the memory began to resurface.
"So I went down to the field?"
He smiled. "Yeah it shocked me too. But I'm happy to know you still care for me".
You gave a nervous chuckle. "Of course I care... Just didn't think I cared enough to end up in the hospital with you."
He laughed, and for a moment, there was an uncomfortable silence. Yet the memory of him possibly seeing you with Malfoy lingered, and just when you thought it was best left unmentioned, Cedric's next question made your heart sink.
"So are you two dating?" he asked plainly, setting the glass of water back down.
"It looks that way," you replied, keeping your eyes fixed on the ceiling, too nervous to meet Cedric's gaze.
"Ah I see," he replied quietly.
That was it? No warnings? No questions?
The conversation abruptly ended after that. Two people who had once shared so much now sat in silence, separated by years and distance, with nothing left to say. You couldn't tell if Cedric was hurt or if he simply didn't care anymore.
After a few more minutes of silence, you glanced over to see Cedric had fallen asleep. As much as you wanted to rest too, your mind wouldn't settle. The entire school would soon know about you and Draco, but what scared you most was how devastated the trio would be. Cedric, on the other hand, seemed indifferent, making the entire plan feel pointless.
The stillness of the room was suddenly broken by a familiar voice, hissing for someone to keep quiet.
"Stay at the door! And be quiet for Merlin's sake" he firmly instructed.
As the footsteps drew nearer, you caught sight of familiar platinum-blond hair. "Draco? What are you doing here?" you whispered.
He crossed his arms, raising a brow with clear disbelief. "Ungrateful much? Obviously, I'm here to check on you. That bludger hit you pretty hard," he muttered, his eyes flicking over your bandages.
"Who's at the door?"
Draco rolled his eyes. "Blaise. Had to bring him along to keep watch for Filch, but he's not exactly making it easy."
You managed a small smile. "Well, thanks for coming. I'm mostly fine—just a bit sore."
"Good to hear". He took a seat at the foot of your bed and his face dropped to a sneer as he glanced over at Cedric, who still lay fast asleep.
