"Get up!"
You groaned, rolling over and pulling the blanket over your head.
"I mean it! Get up!"
The covers were yanked off you, leaving you cold—and thoroughly irritated. You glared up at Hermione, who stood with her hands on her hips.
"It's seven o'clock," you grumbled, glancing at the clock. "Just ten more minutes."
"No! Breakfast is starting, and we'll be late. I've let you sleep in long enough!"
"Fine," you muttered, swinging your legs over the side of the bed and stretching. As you groggily searched for your robes, you broke the news. "Cedric asked me to the ball yesterday by the way"
"What?!" Hermione beamed, her voice rising with excitement. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Because," you yawned, grabbing a hairbrush, "it's not like it means anything."
"Maybe not to you," she snickered, "but that's amazing!"
You shrugged, brushing your hair while Hermione buzzed with enthusiasm. She seemed unusually ecstatic about the ball. For once, there was no talk of school, just musings about corsages, the music, and which dances Ron would inevitably bungle.
When the two of you reached the Gryffindor table, Ron and Harry arrived shortly after, carrying the same air of excitement.
"Guess what," Ron smirked, his grin curling mischievously. "Harry's got a date!"
You both perked up.
"Who is it?" Hermione asked eagerly.
"Cho!" Harry exclaimed. "I figured, since she and Cedric are done, she wouldn't have anyone to go with." He reached for some toast, oblivious to the silence that followed.
You and Hermione exchanged a loaded glance.
"What?" Ron asked, glancing between the two of you.
Hermione cleared her throat. "Well, Cedric sort of asked Y/N yesterday... so, um, I hope that won't make things awkward."
Harry's smile faltered. He scratched the back of his neck and gave you a look you couldn't quite place.
"Well," you said, trying to ease the tension, "Cedric and I can always keep our distance if it makes things easier for you guys."
"No," Harry said firmly. "It'll be fine."
Ron chuckled, clearly amused. "I can't wait to see how this all plays out."

After your last class of the day, you rushed back to your dorm to meet Hermione. She had already laid out both dresses on the bed, and her desk was cluttered with makeup and hair supplies.
As the two of you got ready, Hermione couldn't resist bringing up Cedric again. "Are you sure you're just going as friends?" she teased, arching a brow.
"For the last time, yes," you sighed, smoothing out your hair. "Just because Draco was awful doesn't mean I'm completely over him yet. Seeing him with Pansy tonight is going to be hard, but... having a date makes it a little less humiliating."
Hermione grinned knowingly but didn't push further.
Deep down, you knew there was still some lingering attachment to Cedric. Whether it was love, you couldn't say for sure. What you did know, however, was that the aching sense of loss you'd felt in the beginning had faded.
