This chapter contains mentions of suicide.

I sat on the cold floor of the cell, staring at a spot in the grey concrete floor. My hands sat, handcuffed, on my knees. My left wrist stung slightly in its brace from the metal restraints. Beyond the bars that held me in, I could hear low chatter, clacking of keyboards, and the occasional telephone ring. My cell was illuminated by the bright fluorescent lights of the police station's office—the same one I had been in briefly only yesterday after the interrogation with Detective Kang.

Speaking of which, in the corner of my eye appeared a shadow in the light. My gaze moved for the first time since being thrown in here. There, in front of the bars, stood Detective Kang, with what I could've sworn was contempt in his slight smirk.

"You know what they say about the perpetrator always returning to the scene of the crime."

I said nothing. Letting out a sigh, I leaned my head backwards onto the hard wall behind me. It was a small cell, so the detective's shadow fell on me in a taunting, almost spiteful shade.

The clicking of the station's front door barely caught my attention, followed by rushed footsteps. The holding cell was off to the edge of the station, so I only had a limited view of the station's office. As such, I couldn't see who it was who had entered. Once I heard her voice, though, I recognised who it was.

"Where is he?"

The sound of her voice caused Detective Kang to turn from my cell to face her.

"Ms. Park, what a lovely surprise."

Sooyoung came into view as she stood in front of the cell, facing the detective. "Detective, would it be okay to let Y/N off, just this once?"

"Your friend here, knowing full well of his status as a major suspect of manslaughter, was trespassing in a police-secured area."

"Yes, I know, but he wasn't thinking straight." She took a quick glance over at me as she appealed to the detective.

"That's what anyone could say," Kang Youngjae shot back. "If I let him off for not thinking straight, what of the dozens of other criminals who plead the same excuse?"

She closed her eyes, clenched her jaw lightly. "I'll tell you what, it's his first offence. If he gets into trouble ever again, he's all yours, I'll get out of your hair. Deal?"

Without a word, the detective glared back at Sooyoung, before gazing at the guard who had been standing next to him. He extended his palm and the guard handed him a set of keys. With a jangle and a few clicks, the door to my holding cell swung open, slamming against the wall with a bang.

"Get out of my sight before I change my mind." He glared at me before turning back to Sooyoung. "Both of you."

Sooyoung entered the cell and approached me, crouching next to me.

"Get up."

My mind completely blank, my legs obeyed, though it required more effort than usual due to my hands being cuffed together. This issue was quickly rectified as, just outside the cell's door, Detective Kang grabbed me by the chain of the handcuffs. The metal dug into my skin, and I clenched my jaw in response. He seemed almost disappointed that I hadn't given a bigger reaction as he unlocked my cuffs, releasing my hands from their prison.

Grabbing me by the back of my arm, Sooyoung led me out of the station, turning back to send a dirty look digging into the back of the detective's head for a quick moment. She led me over to the parking space, where her car was. I said nothing as I entered the passenger side.

The drive was silent, up until Sooyoung broke the silence.

"I told you not to go back. Why didn't you just listen to me? You can't be so reckless all the time, it never leads to anything good."
