Hands freezing. Fists clenched. Legs unmoving. Breath shaky.

Wendy wore a white nightgown I didn't recognise, reaching her toes. She looked at me through unkempt hair, longer than the last time I'd seen her. As she started to approach me, I found I was rooted in place.

"W... Wendy...?"

The smile that formed on her face felt so familiar, yet... uncanny. It was, she was, how I remembered her, down to the finest detail. The curve of her eyes, the shape of her nose, the way her teeth showed slightly in her smile. Yet it felt wrong. Last I'd seen her, she was leaving for the afterlife.

"Who else?" She stepped towards me, holding her hands in front of her, fidgeting despite her smile. "Aren't you happy to see me?"

"I thought... you were gone."

She shrugged, stopping in front of me. "I just, decided to stay in the world of the living, ya know? Being a ghost isn't all that bad, after all. Especially if I get to stay here with you."

I couldn't help but notice the absence of the blue tinge ghosts normally had. In Hotel Blue Moon, it was understandable. Ghosts looked like regular people there. But here... wherever this was?

When I gave no reply, Wendy searched my eyes intently. She then lifted a hand to rub her arm, her smile fading. "Where... is this place?" It was almost as though she'd read my mind. "I'm scared, Y/N. Let's go home."

Normally, seeing her this vulnerable would've been painful, and I would've tried everything I could to reassure and be there for her. But this time... it filled me with low-level dread. Her now-overgrown bangs hung over her eyes, shrouding them in light shadow.

I gulped before finally speaking. It pained me to do this, when she was right in front of me, ready to go home. But I had to be sure. "Sure. Let's go, Seungwan. We need to get you caught up on that Webtoon series you love so much. That crush of yours, that decorated soldier, he's waiting for you."

The smile returned to her face, her eyes brightening yet still obscured. "That he is, you know it." With a soft giggle, she turned around. She began back the way I came, back turned to me, trusting me to follow her.

That trust, however, was not mutual.

"I don't know what you are, but I can say that this is a cheap trick on the Queen's part, especially after the shitstorm I've just lived through," I called out after her, not budging.

Wendy stopped in her tracks, her back still towards me.

"Wha–"

"You hate your Korean name. And your Webtoon crush, Chase. He's not a soldier. He's a depressed police officer."
