Christmas Eve

There I sat, on the bed that had probably not seen any use up until I'd started living in the mansion. Next to me, in a state of relaxation I was happy to have gotten used to, sat Jisoo, curling her knees into herself, resting her head on my shoulder.

As had become habit for both of us over the past week, we watched yet another from her collection of musical films, this time the more recent film adaptation of "Tick, Tick... BOOM!". I'd had to spend a good 20 minutes explaining to her who Spiderman was, after letting it slip that Andrew Garfield, the film's lead, had played the role in the past. Needless to say, the connection to Venom, her favourite Marvel character, had amused her.

Though the film continued to run, I found my focus drifting away from the screen and over to the Mogwai sat next to me. Her eyes trained on the movie, her features relaxed in a way that allowed me admiration of just how beautiful she really was. I could feel no warmth from her, and that was normal. But that did little to dull the warmth I felt myself, having her here with me.

As I watched her, her eyebrow twitched, and the very next second she was looking back at me.

"Does my face amuse you, or have you something to say?" A small smile crept onto her face as she said this.

"I've been thinking... what's your reason for staying? In the world of the living, I mean."

"Really, Y/N, if you wished me gone, all you would need to do is ask." She shook her head playfully, letting a few loose strands of hair fall in front of her face.

"What? No, of course not!" I knew she was joking, but her assumption couldn't be further from the truth. "In fact, you're the reason I'm still sane, especially after everything that's happened. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Her smile this time was difficult to read. She lowered her head onto my shoulder, letting out a sigh. "Believe you me, the first joy I have experienced since my passing has been with you by my side."

With her words came a sigh of my own, of something which neared contentment. The moment, brief as it turned out to be, was interrupted by a buzzing in my pocket. Jisoo stirred, lifting her head at the disturbance. I glanced over at the TV screen; judging by the sentimental music number, it seemed that the film was reaching its conclusion.

Seulgi
I have another case, guys.

Sooyoung
Did you forget what happened last time?

Seulgi
It's a friend. Of mine, and of hers. Haunted house.

The group chat remained silent for a minute or so.

Seulgi
Last time was a mess, I know...

Seulgi
Look, just one more, alright? She was friends with her, and she seems to be in pretty bad shape.

Joohyun
Seulgi, you can't play the "she was a friend" card like that. It's pretty insensitive.

"Is something the matter?" Upon hearing Jisoo's voice, I relaxed muscles in my face I hadn't even noticed were tense.

Everything I'd been avoiding for the past week came creeping back in like an insidious infection that refused to die for long. I took a deep breath before explaining. "The others have another case. The victim's a friend... used to be a friend of Wendy's."

Though her eyes were on me, her gaze was distant. She deliberated over her words before speaking. "I trust you understand that you are no longer obligated to join them?"

"I mean, I'm kinda part of the group. I think..."

"Why not remain here, by my side, where it is safe?" Her eyes were now locked on mine, her hand taking mine.
