Later that night, after everyone had calmed down at Jeonghan’s house, Soonyoung couldn’t stop the gnawing unease inside him. Seokmin’s face kept flashing in his mind—smiling, laughing, the kind brother-in-law he thought he knew. But that image felt shattered now, fractured by the truth Jihoon and Jeonghan had laid bare. He couldn’t reconcile it, couldn’t accept it without seeing Seokmin himself.
So, without telling Jihoon or anyone else, Soonyoung slipped out into the night. The streets were eerily quiet, save for the occasional hum of a passing car. As he approached Seokmin’s house, a sense of dread settled over him. The curtains were drawn, but faint light spilled out from the cracks.
The moment Soonyoung pushed open the door to Seokmin’s house, the sight before him made him freeze in his tracks. It was chaos. Broken furniture, shattered glass, and strewn papers littered the floor like the remnants of a violent storm. The air was thick with an oppressive silence, broken only by the faint sound of muffled sobbing. His heart sank as his eyes landed on Seokmin.
Seokmin was sitting on the floor, his back pressed against the wall, his knees pulled to his chest. His face was buried in his hands, his shoulders trembling with each ragged breath. Surrounding him were crumpled photos, torn memories of Jisoo, now defaced beyond recognition.
“Seokmin,” Soonyoung whispered, stepping cautiously into the room.
At the sound of his name, Seokmin’s head shot up. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot and wild, rimmed with tears that streaked down his cheeks. His hair was disheveled, his clothes rumpled, and his expression was something between fury and despair.
“Soonyoung,” Seokmin croaked, his voice raw and cracked. “What are you doing here?”
“I…” Soonyoung hesitated, taking in the wreckage around them. “I came to see you. I needed to…” His words trailed off as he noticed the state of Seokmin’s hands—knuckles split and bleeding, as though he had punched something repeatedly.
Seokmin let out a bitter laugh, low and deranged. “Came to see the monster, did you? Take a good look.” He spread his arms wide, gesturing to the destruction around him. “This is who I am. A monster. Happy now?”
“Stop it,” Soonyoung snapped, his voice sharp. “Don’t talk like that.”
“Why not?” Seokmin shot back, his tone turning venomous. “It’s the truth, isn’t it? Everyone says it. Jihoon. Jeonghan. Even Jisoo—” His voice cracked, and he slammed his fist into the wall beside him. “Especially Jisoo.”
“Seokmin, you need to calm down,” Soonyoung said, taking a cautious step closer.
“Calm down?” Seokmin’s laugh grew louder, more unhinged. He scrambled to his feet, his movements jerky and frantic. “Don’t you get it, Soonyoung? I’ve already lost him. I’ve lost everything! And it’s all my fault!”
“You’re right—it is your fault!” Soonyoung yelled, his frustration boiling over. “But sitting here like this, tearing yourself apart, isn’t going to fix anything! You need to—”
“What do you want me to do?” Seokmin roared, advancing toward Soonyoung. His eyes were wide, manic, tears streaming down his face. “Apologize? Beg for forgiveness? It won’t change anything! He’s gone, Soonyoung! He’s never coming back!”
Soonyoung stood his ground, his fists clenched at his sides. “You’re pathetic,” he spat, his voice trembling with anger. “You claim to love him, but look at you. You’re too much of a coward to even try to fix this.”
