Chapter IV
Light has always been bright. He was kind and intelligent, but he couldn't help but yearn for more. He quietly lusted for change. When he saw a notebook fall from the skies, he was sure it was a prank. But he soon figured it was a blessing. God had given him the approval to fix humanity. Something he was sure he could do! He was light. He was brighter than anything, more brilliant than most! It was the change he wanted.
He was unique, just like everyone said. At first, he didn't believe it, but he began to realize that everyone could tell he was the change the world needed. Indirectly they gave him the drive to continue. He met the standards they set. He was perfect, and he would continue to position himself as an example for the new world. The world he would form with his two bare hands.
Everything was going great, and it got even better when he met one of god's assistants. His name was Ryuk though Light wouldn't say it; Ryuk was one of the best things to happen to him. He was truly blessed. Though Ryuk said otherwise, Light knew this was a task god gave solely to him. Ryuk knew no better.
Ryuk was odd, he wasn't trustworthy, but that didn't mean he wouldn't help Light if he gave him something in return. Such as apples. Something Light found strange. Why was it apples? It didn't bother him, though, if it meant proceeding through with his task.
Throughout his time with Ryuk, he tried to try to be on good terms with Ryuk. It was a challenging task, especially in the beginning. Ryuk seems to wander to unusual places. At first, he thought it was the first time he walked on human planes. But Light quickly got rid of that theory when he managed to catch Ryuk, leaving his house with an uneaten apple. It would seem expected to others, but Light knew if the apple were for Ryuk, then he would have eaten it without delay. He would have also brought more for his stroll. Light grew intimidated and curious. He started to ask more of Ryuk, and thankfully, during this time, someone had set up cameras in his room. A perfect excuse. He could tell Ryuk grew restless after going lengthy periods without seeing the mystery person. He was curious, though, who could have caught Ryuk's eye, and for how long had they been in contact? Were they to be his enemy or ally? He couldn't help but worry, but he pushed them away anyway. He would cross the bridge when he needed to.
Even though he had his god duties, he still needed to put some effort into his studies. He was applying for one of the best universities in his area. He was going to follow in his father's footsteps, well, until he successfully became the world's ruler.
When the day came for the entrance exams, he was confident. He knew there was no way he could flunk the exam. He made sure to take every step with confidence. He honestly couldn't take another hit to his pride after his "showdown" with L. He made a mistake in revealing his location. He couldn't, wouldn't make a mistake like that ever again. It wouldn't be befitting for a god. And he was doing an excellent job if he weren't he wouldn't have been able to kill Raye Penber and his annoyingly nosy fiancé Naomi.
Light took notice of Ryuk's odd actions when they entered the building. He knew he couldn't ask Ryuk then since it would make him look strange. So, he opted to glance at Ryuk. Ryuk only smiled and crackled as he told Light that he would meet up with him later. Unable to tell Ryuk otherwise, he groaned. It bothered Light that he couldn't control Ryuk, but he had to work with what he had. In the end, Light entered his assigned exam room. He only noticed a few things, one of them was Ryuk hovering a stone-faced figure. They made no suggestions that they could see Ryuk, but he couldn't help but wonder if that was indeed the case. He couldn't hear what Ryuk was saying, but it was the first time he saw the Shinigami express other emotions except for the occasional crackle here and there. He needs to keep an eye on them no matter what. With that, the exam began.
