Chapter 8: The Journey to Ashfall City
The journey to Ashfall City took days, but with each passing moment, Alex felt the weight of his newfound powers grow heavier. The crystal from the Evolved Zombie had enhanced his abilities, but something inside him began to stir—a deep, unsettling feeling that the more power he absorbed, the closer he came to losing himself.
The group traveled through barren landscapes and ruined cities. Mutated creatures roamed freely, and the environment itself seemed to fight against them. Ashfall City, once a bustling metropolis, now lay in ruins, its towering skyscrapers crumbling, overtaken by the same monsters that ravaged the world.
On the second day of their trek, they crossed paths with a group of survivors scavenging for supplies. Eliza and Xander immediately put up defensive stances, but Alex held his hand out, signaling them to stay calm.
“We don’t need to fight,” Alex said. “Let’s just talk.”
The survivors hesitated, but when they saw the weapons Alex and his team carried, they lowered their guns.
A grizzled man stepped forward, his eyes wary. “We’ve seen your kind before. You’re not like the rest, are you?”
Alex was about to reply when a massive explosion echoed from the city.
“Get down!” Eliza shouted, pulling Alex and the others behind cover.
A horde of Evolved Zombies, led by a massive beast with scales like molten lava, charged toward them. The survivors panicked, and a few ran, but the horde was too fast.
“Stay close!” Xander bellowed, as he swung his hammer, sending shockwaves through the ground.
The team fought fiercely, with Alex summoning energy blades and creating barriers to protect the survivors. But the creature’s strength was overwhelming. Alex could feel the power inside him building, his mind screaming for him to use the pencil. He quickly scribbled Thunderstrike, and a bolt of lightning struck the beast, disintegrating it in a single hit.
The rest of the zombies faltered, and Eliza and Xander cut them down swiftly. The survivors, awestruck, watched in silence as the group secured the area.
