Chapter 10: Betrayal and Allies

The group finally arrived at Ashfall City’s outskirts, where a large compound surrounded by high walls and armed guards stood. As they approached, a woman with a sniper rifle aimed at them from the top of the wall.

“Who goes there?” the woman called down.

“We’re survivors,” Alex said, raising his hands. “We don’t mean any harm.”

The woman lowered the rifle but still watched them warily. “Names?”

“Eliza, Xander, Riley, Alex, and Shadow,” Alex said.

The woman nodded and signaled for them to approach. When they entered, they were greeted by a group of tough-looking survivors. It became clear quickly that this was a faction, one that operated like a well-oiled machine. But Alex sensed tension in the air—something wasn’t right.

Alex’s eyes narrowed. “Who?”

“I don’t know yet, but I’ll find them. Stay cautious.”

Riley’s warning gnawed at him as he lay in bed, unable to sleep. The presence of a traitor was unsettling.
