Chapter 9: Xander’s Burden

As the dust settled, the survivors expressed their gratitude, but it was clear they were more interested in Alex’s growing abilities. Some even whispered rumors of a “Chosen One” who could end the apocalypse. Alex didn’t like the attention but realized that the more people knew about his powers, the harder it would be to remain unnoticed.

Xander seemed troubled after the fight. He kept his distance, his eyes focused on the horizon, a storm brewing behind his normally calm demeanor.

Eliza noticed too. “What’s wrong?”

“I’ve seen too many people like them,” Xander said quietly, his eyes dark. “That group back there—they’re like the ones who betrayed me. I was part of a faction that used people like us, powered people, to gain control. They’d use whatever abilities they could to survive.”

“What happened?” Alex asked.

“They turned on me when I wouldn’t follow orders,” Xander replied. “Now, they’re hunting for anyone like me. If they find out what we’re capable of...” He trailed off.

Alex placed a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll handle it. You’re with us now.”

Xander nodded, though the weight of his past clearly still haunted him.
