The mutant Attack

Two days later, the safehouse was anything but calm. Despite the rising tension within the team, they all knew they had a responsibility to keep Athens—and each other—safe. A report had come in through one of Spuros's contacts about another mutant wreaking havoc near Syntagma Square.

“Looks like a strong one,” Spuros said, showing a grainy video on his phone. The mutant in question was massive, with fiery red skin, glowing eyes, and the ability to emit scorching flames from his hands. Buildings were already ablaze, and civilians were running in terror.

Nikolas cracked his knuckles, trying to ignore the dull ache in his injured hands. “We can’t let this guy destroy the city. Let’s move.”

Kwstas nodded curtly, his usual calm demeanor now tinged with exhaustion. “Everyone stick together. We don’t know what we’re walking into.”

Chaos in Syntagma

When the team arrived, the scene was worse than expected. Fires raged across the square, casting an eerie orange glow over the chaos. The mutant stood in the center, laughing as he sent waves of flame toward anything in sight.

But they weren’t alone. A heavily armed government task force was already on the scene, their black vehicles and armored soldiers spreading through the area.

“This is going to get messy,” Sofia muttered, watching from a nearby rooftop.

“They’re not here to help,” Morena said, her voice tense. “They’re here for us.”

Kwstas’s jaw tightened. “We’ll handle it. Focus on the mutant first. Spuros, get civilians out of the area. Morena, disarm the task force if they become a threat. Everyone else—let’s go.”

The Fight Begins

Nikolas was the first to charge in, his seismic powers cracking the pavement as he leaped toward the flaming mutant. The enemy roared and hurled a fireball at him, but Nikolas punched through it, his superhuman strength sending sparks flying.

“Not bad,” Nikolas growled, landing a heavy blow on the mutant’s chest.

Kwstas followed up, creating a shield of light energy to block another wave of flames. He shot a beam of concentrated light at the mutant, forcing him to stumble backward.

“Focus fire!” Kwstas shouted. “Keep him off balance!”

Sofia and Morena worked together, using Morena’s metal manipulation to create barriers while Sofia supported with precision attacks. Spuros’s portals appeared across the square, helping civilians escape the destruction.

“Come on, keep moving!” Spuros shouted, guiding a family through a glowing blue portal.

Government Intervention

But the task force wasn’t content to sit on the sidelines. One of their commanders barked an order, and soldiers raised their rifles—not at the mutant, but at the team.

“Targets in sight. Open fire!”

The first shots rang out, and chaos erupted. Morena acted instantly, yanking the guns from the soldiers’ hands with a wave of her power. The weapons clattered to the ground as she stepped forward, her metal bracelet transforming into sharp spikes.

“You want to fight?” she said coldly. “Fine.”

Kwstas spun toward the soldiers, his anger boiling over. “You’re supposed to protect these people, not attack us!”

One of the soldiers hesitated but fired a single shot. Nikolas cried out as the bullet hit his hand, the force knocking him to the ground.

Kwstas’s Rage

Everything stopped for a moment. Kwstas turned to see Nikolas clutching his bleeding hand, his face twisted in pain.

“Nikolas!” Kwstas shouted, running toward him. But something inside him snapped. The sight of his injured friend—his injured Nikolas—sent a surge of energy coursing through him.

“You idiots!” Kwstas roared, his body glowing with an intense golden light. He raised his hands, and beams of energy shot out, hitting the task force’s vehicles. The cars exploded in a series of deafening blasts, flames and debris raining down on the street.

The soldiers scrambled to retreat, their shouts of confusion drowned out by the sound of destruction.

“Kwstas, stop!” Sofia shouted. “You’re going too far!”

But Kwstas didn’t hear her. His anger consumed him, his light energy growing brighter and more erratic with each passing second.

Morena Takes Control

Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, Morena stepped forward, her expression steely. She raised her arms, and the soldiers’ remaining weapons were ripped from their hands, twisting into useless scraps of metal.

“Stand down!” Morena commanded, her voice sharp. “This fight isn’t with you.”

The soldiers hesitated, their confidence shaken. With their weapons gone and their vehicles destroyed, they had no choice but to retreat.

Aftermath

Nikolas sat on the ground, cradling his injured hand as blood seeped through his fingers. Kwstas knelt beside him, his anger replaced by guilt.

“Are you okay?” Kwstas asked, his voice trembling.

“I’m fine,” Nikolas said through gritted teeth. “Just a scratch.”

“That wasn’t a scratch,” Sofia muttered, examining the wound. “We need to get you patched up.”

Kwstas looked at the destruction he had caused—the smoldering cars, the wreckage scattered across the square—and felt a wave of shame.

“I...I lost control,” he admitted quietly.

“No kidding,” Morena said, though her tone wasn’t unkind. “But you’re not the only one. This was a disaster for all of us.”

The Team Regroups

Back at the safehouse, Nikolas’s hand was bandaged, and the team sat in a somber circle. No one spoke for a long time.

Finally, Melina broke the silence with a weak laugh. “Well, that sucked.”

Spurik chuckled despite himself. “Yeah, no kidding.”

Sofia frowned. “The government’s going to come after us even harder now. They’ll use this as proof that we’re dangerous.”

“They were already coming after us,” Nikolas said, his voice bitter. “This just gives them more excuses.”

Kwstas stood, his light energy flickering faintly around him. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice heavy with regret. “I let my emotions get the better of me. I shouldn’t have—”

Nikolas interrupted him. “Don’t apologize. You saved us. You saved me.”

Kwstas looked at him, his guilt still evident. “But at what cost?”

“We’ll figure it out,” Sofia said firmly. “We always do.”

The team exchanged weary but determined glances. They knew the road ahead would only get harder, but they also knew they had each other—and for now, that was enough.
