Jackson's POV
Getting into the elevator I leaned against the back wall and pull Abigail to stand infront of me between my legs incase anyone came in they wouldn't see the tent in my pants. And it would've been a great idea except her ass pressed against my crotch just made it worse.
As luck would have it just as the doors were almost closed the bell rings and the doors open back up again for and older couple to get on. Normally I wouldn't care who was around, but they seem like a nice old couple and I didn't have it in me to disrespect them.
By the time they get to their floor my erection has gone down and I can think a little clearer. I need to make sure Abby's okay. She is my main priority.
I open the door to our room and usher her in. "So are you going to tell me the real reason you got sick?" I go to the mini fridge and grab a bottle of water for Abby while she lays on the couch.
"I already told you. It was the sun." I sit on the coffee table handing her the water.
"I know that's what you told me. Now how about you tell me the truth." She takes a long sip and hands it back to me to place on the table.
I lean my elbows on my knees clasping my hands together. I raise my brows to say I'm waiting. She huffs, pushing herself to sit up a bit. She looks down at her own wringing hands. "I" she pauses, buying her lip. "I'm scared Jax." I quickly lift her legs and drape them over me as I sit and pull her onto my lap.
"Scared of what,Baby?" I cup her face making eye contact.
"Is this going to be our life? Someone always trying to hurt us or kill us?" I frown shaking my head.
"No Baby. Nobody is trying anything. So they sent someone to take pictures, so what? I'll handle it when we get back." She sighs loud and pushes off my lap and paces back and forth.
"Nobody takes pictures for no reason Jackson. They were taking pictures of us to use against you. Finding leverage to hold over you most likely so you'll work for them again. They know about me. And it'll only be a matter of time before they know I'm pregnant. I know how the mafia works Jackson."
"Oh really Princess and how do you know how the Mafia works?" Her left hand on her hip, she rubs the bridge of her nose with the right as she laughs softly.
"You know, with all of your guys that find out information for you I'm really surprised you still don't know." I look up at Abby now, my brow forming a deep V. Slowly I get to my feet.
"Still don't know what Abby? What have you been keeping from me?" I stand right in front of Abby, hovering over her. She doesn't cower a bit.
"My real last name." I fist my hands at my side.
How did we all miss something like that? Easy, nobody bothered to look into her or Celeste.
"What's your real last name Abigail?" I grit out, my voice comes out deep and controlled. She steps even closer. Her chest almost touches mine.
"Palumbo." I freeze hearing that name. I'm sure I've gone pale. "My father was an underboss. That's how I know so much about the Mafia." My eyes search her face trying to find a lie. But I find nothing.
"Why did you keep that from me?" She deflates, placing her hands on my chest.
"I wasn't suppose to know. I don't think my mom even knew." Someone's wife not knowing that seems close to impossible.
"What about your sister or John?" She shakes her head.
"That's why I was always understanding and excepting of your past. All of that didn't mean you were a bad man. My dad was a good man to his family. Especially to his wife." I walk back to the couch taking her by the hand I sit her back in my lap.
"Baby. They weren't looking for me. They were checking on you." She jerks her head back scrunching her face. I laugh through my nose. " I never told you before because there didn't seem to be a reason. But, I worked for your father. I never met him, I just worked for the Palumbos. His mafia. Lower guys like me never got time with the man in charge. Abby, your dad wasn't the under boss. He was THE boss. " She shifts to straddle my legs.
"He never told me. I just assumed."
"How did you find out?"
"He wouldn't give me my birth certificate or social security card when I turned 16. I wanted to get my learners permit. So I snuck into his office to get it myself. I found it, but not before I found his birth certificate, and his phony one. There were a whole bunch of contracts and account information I found. I went through his desk and found lists of names. One of them was about a ceremony. I knew some of the names on the list. I went to school with them. And I knew they had just been sworn in to the Mafia. I never knew what family they were with." She plays with my wedding band as she talks. Spinning it around my finger. "How do you know they were just checking on me? How do you know they don't want to hurt you or me? This is why I got sick. The thought that our life will always be filled with chaos. How can we raise a child in a life like that?" She hangs hers head, but I place my index finger under her chin to lift her face. Her teary eyes look up to mine.
"The same way your dad did. We change our name, move away where nobody knows us. Okay?" Sniffling she nods her head. Cupping her face I softly press three long pecks to her lips. I wipe away a few rogue tears with the pad of my thumbs. "I still want to go meet with them when we get back. I'll bring Sergio and a few of my guys."
"I'm going with you. If these men worked for my dad I should be with you." Now it's my turn to deflate. I know she won't budge. The captains did know her. I had heard stories about her and her sister. Their names were never used. It's was always the 'older girl' and 'his little princess'.
I smirk thinking about his name for her. " what's so funny?" I smirk looking up at her through my lashes. A small smile starts to grow on her face.
"So years ago. The captains would talk about your father. How he had to go see the older girl's chorus concert or what he was getting his little princess for Christmas. I never thought to much about it at the time. Everyone's got kid's, so who cares. But now, thinking back, who knew I'd be married to one of those kids. And I just thought it was funny how the first pet name I had for you was Princess." She looks past me with raised brows. Slowly they flatten and a smile that reaches her eyes appears. She looks down between us, then up at me through her lashes.
"Everyday, when he'd get home from work I'd come running down the steps and he'd bend down yelling out 'Princess!' And catch me. He'd throw me up in the air." She tilts her head to the side. It's evident that he was a good father. "Gosh. I can remember it like it only yesterday. I was so happy." Abby's voice starts to crack, and I can't help but smile from her sweet story. "Like I said, whatever you did out on the streets doesn't define who you are. What's in your heart is what matters. How you treat the people that love you is what matters. " I pull her closer pressing my forehead to hers.
"Abigail, I promise to always love you and our child. I will always strive to be the man you deserve."
"You already are Jackson. You already are."
