Skylar's POVI woke to sunlight streaming through the window, casting a warm, golden glow over Sam's room. His arm was draped protectively around my waist, his steady breathing warm against the back of my neck. It was one of those rare, quiet moments I wished I could freeze forever—a brief respite from the chaos that always seemed to follow us.
As Sam stirred, he tightened his hold on me, pulling me closer with a soft sigh. "You're such an early riser," his husky morning voice murmured, still thick with sleep.
I giggled, turning to face him as I brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "Morning," I said playfully, poking his cheek.
A lazy smile spread across his lips, and he cracked one eye open, his gaze soft and warm. "Good morning." He lifted a hand to caress my cheek, his touch light but reassuring.
"What did the vampire want last night?" he asked, his voice suddenly more serious.
I frowned slightly at his choice of words. "Sam..."
He sighed, his jaw tightening just a fraction. "Fine. What did Carlisle want?"
I shrugged, leaning back slightly against the pillow. "I don't know yet. He gave me an envelope, but I haven't opened it."
His brow furrowed, and I could see the concern creeping into his expression. "And you haven't opened it yet?"
"I've been busy," I teased, a small smirk tugging at the corners of my lips.
The teasing made him blush faintly, a rare sightbut the determined look that quickly followed was far more familiar. "Skylar," he said seriously, his voice soft but firm. "You know how I feel about your connection to the Cullens. They're—"
"Your natural enemies," I finished for him, cutting him off with a sigh.
His gaze softened as he reached for my hand. "They're dangerous, Sky. You and Nikita are my world. I just need to know that you're safe. Always."
I squeezed his hand, offering him a small smile. "Sam, they're also mine and Niki's family. I'll always put her safety first, you know that. And I'll let you know if there's anything to worry about."
He studied me for a moment, his shoulders finally relaxing as he exhaled. "Okay," he murmured. "Just... keep me in the loop."
"I will," I promised.
He kissed my forehead, lingering for a moment before pulling back with a softer expression. "Let's go get Niki. I want to show you two my favorite spot in La Push."
The thought of spending the day together filled me with warmth, and I nodded, my smile mirroring his.
While Sam was in the shower, I retrieved the envelope from my pocket, curiosity finally getting the better of me. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I unfolded the letter, and the weight of its words hit me like a stone.
The Cullens' letter warned me about the Volturi, a powerful vampire coven that held immense authority. Bella's transformation into a vampire, it explained, was inevitable...something Edward opposed but could no longer prevent. As if that wasn't enough, Edward intended to propose to Bella. They wanted me to sing at the wedding.
I set the letter down, my chest tightening. The situation felt like a ticking time bomb. If the pack discovered that Bella would become a vampire, there would be no stopping the inevitable clash between them and the Cullens.
And yet, Bella's choice or lack thereof left her with no other path.
I sighed heavily, pressing a hand to my chest as though I could calm the storm brewing inside me. The weight of my loyalty to both Sam and the Cullens threatened to crush me. How could I protect everyone I loved when their worlds were destined to collide?
