1 month later:
Agatha held Rio's hand as she led her into the theater. Rio let her in first as they ascended up the stairs to the top balcony. Over the years Rio had been taking money from the people who died, and now she was rich. They had paid for the entire top row, leaving only the lower levels of the theater to be filled.
No one could see them.
"My lady," Rio gestured to the seat in the front and Agatha sat down.
Rio plopped down in the seat next to her and their fingers intertwined as Agatha looked down at the stage below them.
"Like the view?" Rio asked.
"Why yes, I do," Agatha replied. "I've actually never been to the theater before."
"I know, my love. Why do you think I brought you here?"
Agatha smiled and they shared a brief kiss before someone came out onto the stage beneath them. The people in the crowd quieted.
"If poverty be a title to poetry, I am sure no-body can dispute mine," the man on stage said. "I own myself of the Company of Beggars; and I make one at their weekly festivals at St. Giles's. I have a small yearly salary for my catches, and am welcome to a dinner there whenever I please, which is more than most poets can say."
Agatha grinned at Rio. "A poet. How cute."
"Get used to it, love, this is the Beggar's Opera," Rio replied.
"Well I'm not going to be begging for anything," Agatha said. "And you won't either."
"I know," Rio smiled.
They nestled together as the play continued.
...
Agatha sipped from her spoon across the table from Rio. They sat in a cafe, hidden in the corner.
A waiter walked up to them and bowed. "Good evening, Ladies. What else might I get for you?"
"We need nothing else," Rio replied, at Agatha's nod.
The waiter walked away, and Agatha smiled. "Thanks. For taking me to all these places."
"Oh, my love, we have to get things in before the baby arrives and we're busy with him."
Agatha grinned wider and Rio smiled. Rio eyed around them before reaching out and taking Agatha's hand.
"You don't need to worry about them," Agatha said, flicking her eyes to the groups of talking people around them. "I can always erase their memories if we need."
"That's right," Rio replied, "I keep forgetting you can do that now."
Agatha winked. "The Darkhold has many uses."
"It does," Rio agreed, "but remember—"
"Yes, I know, no dreamwalking." Agatha nodded. "Not until after the baby is born. There are too many things that could go wrong."
Rio's thumb caressed Agatha's hand as she nodded in response.
Out of the corner of her eye, Agatha spotted someone. Her eyes flicked toward the motion and behind a man's head she could see the girl who had led her to the Darkhold.
Agatha froze briefly as the girl locked eyes with Agatha. Her face wore no expression, she just held Agatha's gaze. Finally Agatha broke her vision away and when she looked back, the girl was gone.
Maybe she had been imagining her.
But Agatha couldn't hold up her promise anyway, so she returned to the meal, continuing the light conversation with her wife.
...
Agatha sat with the Darkhold in front of her on the table. She flipped through the pages she'd begun to know well and paused at one page. The dreamwalking.
The curiosity ebbed into Agatha as she stared at the page.
"Dreamwalking allows the user to possess the body of their multiversal counterpart," the text read.
Agatha knew the risks, the rules, the things that could happen if she did this. But she had been in control of her powers for so long now she felt confident in her abilities. She could keep herself, and her baby, safe.
Agatha jump started the Darkhold's magic, lifting herself and it into the air above the table. Black tendrils of magic shot out and flew around Agatha, who could feel the amount of power in the Darkhold's pages.
She started the dreamwalking spell, seeing her options. For a multiverse, it was surprisingly small.
She felt almost as if there was something there, something that was keeping it from growing. But now was not the time to think about that. That was a question for later.
Agatha randomly chose a universe, feeling herself dissociate from her body.
She blinked and her eyes opened to see herself in the forest. She looked around to see someone standing behind her. As she turned, though, she felt a sharp pain in her midsection and she fell to the ground, her knees giving out.
She looked down at herself and saw a long blade sticking out her stomach. Blood dripped from the wound and Agatha groaned.
She needed to get out of there. This was not a good universe to travel to.
But the pain distracted Agatha too much. She couldn't focus enough to pull herself out.
Agatha heard a grunt and a thud and she looked up. There was Rio. Her hand held the curved knife she always carried, though this time it was covered in blood. Through her blurred vision, Agatha could see a slumped figure on the ground, the person that must have stabbed Agatha and who Rio must have just killed.
Rio dropped down beside Agatha and held her shoulders. "Agatha!"
"Rio..." Agatha could feel something slimy make it's way up her throat and tasted iron. It was blood.
She was dying.
Agatha really needed to get out of there. If this body died and she was still possessing it...
"Agatha, you're going to be okay!" Rio sat Agatha up and pulled the sword out of her middle without warning.
Agatha screamed at the pain and she felt Rio licking her back. She could feel the wound closing up, but her insides still weren't right...
Agatha felt her limbs go numb and she found she couldn't talk anymore.
"Wait! Don't let me take you! Just hold on!" Rio cried out. She stopped licking Agatha's back and let her lay down as she tried to heal Agatha.
Agatha's ears closed up and she felt her vision go dark.
Suddenly her vision was clear as she found herself back in control of the body.
Rio stopped licking Agatha and looked up at her in confusion and shock. "Agatha... no... you aren't Agatha anymore... who are you?"
Agatha stared at Rio. No, not the Rio she knew. Another version of her.
No.
This body must have died. She was inhabiting a dead body.
Agatha squeezed her eyes shut, now able to think and pull herself out of this universe's body.
The last thing she saw were her pale, dead hands...
