For the first time in a long time, things were steady and calm.
Hershel was healing quicker than any of us had expected and the prisoners; Tomas, Andrew, and Big Tiny had been killed while Axel and Oscar took up residence in the cell block we'd intended to clear out before things took a turn for the worst.
As for my newfound relationship with the youngest Dixon in our group, things were almost concerningly peaceful.
Lori was nearing the end of her pregnancy, and everyone tried to stay optimistic about the whole ordeal. With Lilly's extensive knowledge in the medical field and enough antibiotics and medical supplies to sustain a small army, everyone's thoughts and concerns about the whole ordeal were lighter than they had been on the road.
I'd caught the oldest Greene sister talking to the women a few days ago, averting the pregnant women's concern over the baby, stating 'for hundreds of years, women all around the world had delivered babies in way worse circumstances than she was in, and they'd both be fine.'
After that argument, it was easier to calm her nerves over the situation and we all waited for the last member of our group to get his bearings and get back up on his feet, after many comments about crawling up the walls in the cell, being on heavy restrictions by his own daughter, Hershel was working his way to getting back up and moving.
For such an old guy, he was determined, I'd give him that.
He was talking everyone's ear off, trying to bribe them into getting him up and out of the cell for his sanity.
Finally, Lilly caved and decided he was stable and healthy enough to finally leave the cell he'd been in for over a week and a half.
"Stay with me? Help keep him stable." She'd asked earlier in the morning as everyone went outside, my boyfriend included.
So here I was, standing by her side as she held the crutches out to him so he could stand up.
He shuffled to the end of the bed with a determined look on his face and grabs ahold of the crutches.
"Take your time daddy." Lilly encouraged as he put the crutches under his shoulders and slowly works himself to his foot.
"What else am I gonna do? I can't stand looking up at the bottom of that bunk any longer." He replies as he stands up, before trying to move forward, stumbling over a bit, making Lilly and I catch him as he starts to lean into me.
He taps the crutches on the floor a bit, trying to find a good placement for them before taking a step forward.
"You know.. I think I'm pretty steady." He offers to his concerned daughter at his side before moving forward.
"That's a good start.. wanna take a break?" Lilly asks him as we both guide him out of the cell.
"A break?" He asks her with a chuckle. "Let's go for a little stroll." He says before we're all moving out of the cell, both of us keeping our hands close in case he loses his balance again and goes down to the floor.
Beth, Lori, and Carl, who were all outside of the cell watching the entire situation unfold come forward and Beth replaces me beside her dad as we all take off toward the exit.
As we move, everyone offers the oldest member of our group encouragement as we make it to the doors leading outside, and I step forward to slide the door open, not wanting to break Hershels streak, and then head down the steps as he works his way toward me.
