Time skips

The evening had set in, and I could already smell the food wafting from the kitchen. My mother had called me and my sister to come to the dining table. As I walked in, I saw my mother and Ayan, Zain's best friend, serving with my mother. His arrival had been a bit of a surprise, but everyone was happy to have him here, especially my mother, who had always treated Ayan like family.

I walked up to the table and noticed that there were only five places set. Zain and Abbu were missing. I looked at my mother and asked, "Where is Zain and Abbu?"

She looked up from the table where she was placing some salad and replied, "They both went to the company. Zeeshan had some important work, and they needed to stay until it's done before Sarah's wedding."

I nodded, understanding that work often kept them busy these days. "So, why don't we wait for them to come back?" I suggested, hoping we could all eat together.

My mother smiled and shook her head. "They're going to be late, and the food will get cold if we wait too long."

Before I could respond, Ayan spoke up from across the table. "Aunty, how about we wait for a little while? The Isha azaan is about to start, so we can pray first and then eat. They'll be back soon."

I hadn't even thought of the time, but Ayan's suggestion made sense. It was a small but thoughtful gesture, one that made me appreciate his presence even more. He had just come back from Turkey, yet he was already fitting in perfectly with the family.

My mother seemed to agree with Ayan's idea. "That's a good suggestion, Ayan," she said. "We'll wait for the azaan."

We all moved to the prayer area, where we prayed quietly. I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. It wasn't just about the food-it was the moment of peace and togetherness that we had been missing. Even though Zain and Abbu weren't there yet, something about this small act of waiting felt right.

Once we finished the prayer, we returned to the dining table. The aroma of the food was even stronger now, and I could tell that my mother had put a lot of effort into preparing the meal. As we sat down, I felt a sense of comfort. Despite the fact that Zain and Abbu hadn't arrived yet, it didn't feel like the evening was incomplete. There was something about Ayan's,asma aunty and tahir uncle presence that made everything feel familiar, like no time had passed at all.

The conversation shifted to lighter topics. Asma aunty told us about her time in Turkey and the things she had experienced. We all laughed as she shared funny stories from his trip. My sister, who had been quiet at first, now seemed fully engaged in the conversation. It was nice to see everyone interacting in a way that felt natural.

Just as we were finishing up the meal, my phone buzzed. I looked down and saw a message from Zain: "We're on our way now, sorry we're late. Don't start without us."

I smiled and showed the message to my mother. "They're coming soon," I said.

My mother smiled back. "Good, we'll wait for them."

We continued talking, sharing stories and laughing, until we heard the sound of the door opening. Zain and Abbu had finally returned. They greeted everyone and sat down at the table, where we all shared a meal together.

It wasn't the grand family gathering I had imagined, but in that moment, with Ayan back and everyone present, it felt just right. Sometimes, the best moments come when you least expect them, and tonight was one of those nights.

After dinner, the atmosphere in the house was calm and comfortable. My mother, Asma aunty, excused herself to help clean up in the kitchen. I noticed her exchanging a few words with my father, who nodded and smiled before continuing his conversation with Tahir uncle. They began discussing the company's current projects, the challenges they were facing, and the ongoing preparations for Sarah's wedding. It seemed like they were getting into a deep discussion, one that would probably go on for a while, so I decided to take the opportunity to do something I always do before bed.
