As the marimba alarm noise rung throughout my bedroom my annoyance started to emerge. Why the hell would I put my alarm on a Saturday?
I quickly patted the side of my bed in search for my iPhone. Once I found it I pressed the lock button which silenced the annoying alarm. I groaned out in annoyance realizing that I was awake at 6 in the morning. Great.
I quickly threw on my pajama shorts and headed down the stairs, hoping that no one was home. My sudden relief disappeared once I saw my lame twenty year-old brother laying on the living room couch, watching Adventure Time. You are never too old for cartoons.
Ashton is my older brother. He's twenty years old & attends NYU. He's smart, well-rounded, goofy, positive—but annoying as hell. He usually comes over every other weekend to hangout with me & my mom. And unfortunately this weekend was the every other.
"Good morning ugly." He sang once he saw me walking down the stairs. Did I mention that he was immensely annoying, I think I did. I rolled my eyes at him, walking into the kitchen. The smell of bacon and eggs surfaced around the house.
"Really Ashton?" My mom asked. I grabbed a glass from the cabinet, pouring myself some apple juice.
"Haven't seen you since yesterday morning." Mom said, while placing the unbaked croissants on the tray. I wonder who's coming over?
"You're always at work." I shot back. It's true.
"I mean after school." She said while placing the croissants in the oven. "I just went for a walk." I said, taking a sip from my juice.
"Is everything okay?"
"Yes mom. I'm eighteen, I can't simply go for a walk?" I asked. It came out a bit harsh but I wasn't trying to be. "Okay, fine then. I just want to know if everything is straight with you." She said, playfully glaring at me. I gave a smug smile, "Everything is fine with me." I said. Is it really?
"Why is Ashton here?" I asked while glancing over at him in the living room. He was pretending that he was beating on drums. He was actually really good at playing them.
"Because I want to be and It's my house too." He said, rolling his eyes. "Don't you have some five thousand page essay to write." I asked sarcastically, also hoping that something like that was actually a thing. "Doesn't exist." He shot back.
"Why do you guys bicker like twelve year olds?"
"He called me ugly as soon as I came down stairs." I said watching him as he walked into the kitchen. Mom looked over at Ashton, raising her eyebrows.
He sighed, finally giving in. "You know I'm playing. I'm obviously good looking, so of course you have to be somewhat good looking. It's all about the genes." He said giving me a small hug. I couldn't help but laugh at how stupid his logic sounded.
Moments later the door bell rang. As I walked up to it and peeped through the peep hole, I noticed an all too familiar face. One of Ashton's best friend's Derek. This morning just got a whole lot interesting.
