CHAPTER 27

Charles

Before

The first thing I notice when I open my eyes is the soft, steady rhythm of her breathing beside me. Céline's head is tucked into the crook of my arm, her hair spreads over the pillow. The room is quiet, it's still early but I can't sleep anymore, already thinking about what I can do to make her happy. Breakfast in bed has to be the first move, and so I shift slightly, careful not to wake her, my gaze moving to the window. The snow has started falling again, thick, soft flakes drifting lazily down outside. December it's coming to an end, but MonteCarlo is still muffled beneath the snow, and this year it has been for over a month. I glance down at Céline, watching as her chest rises and falls gently with each breath. I've always liked mornings like this, quiet and slow, no rush to get anywhere and no race to think about.

Just the special day ahead of us.

Her hair is messy, and there's a soft curve on her lips that makes me want to kiss her, just a gentle press of my lips to her forehead, but I hold back, not wanting to disturb her. Even if the warmth of the bed pulls me in, making it harder to get up, I know I have to go and get the breakfast ready before she wakes up too. And so I try to push myself up slightly, careful not to wake her, but as I do, she stirs, shifting against me. I freeze, holding my breath for a moment, and when Céline's moves closer to my body, I say goodbye to my plan. I smile, reaching out to gently push a strand of hair from her face.

'Good morning, mon amour.' I whisper.

She doesn't answer, but I can tell she's not completely asleep anymore. I lean down and kiss her forehead, the warmth of her skin against my lips sending a rush of comfort through me. And I can't help but smile again. 'You know I wanted to surprise you, but you just ruined it all by waking up.' I say, joking, sliding my arms around her body to keep her closer. She stirs again, her eyes fluttering open, and when they meet mine, I can't help the smile that spreads across my face.

'Morning.' She murmurs, as if she hasn't heard what I just said. 'Yeah, morning.' I repeat, laughing at her sleepy face, brushing a kiss across her lips this time. Céline smiles into the kiss, her fingers lazily tracing the line of my jaw.

'What was the surprise?' Céline asks, her eyes piercing into me as I try to stay as serious as I can.

'Oh so you heard me, fleur!' Her laugh fills the space between us while I put on my most dramatic expression, pretending to be mad at her. 'Anyway you just ruined it, you woke up too soon!' Céline raises an eyebrow trying to keep a serious expression as she shifts in my arms to face me. 'Okay then, what was it for?' Her face looks so genuinely curious that for a moment all my enthusiasm drops.

It can't be.

She can't have forgotten.

For some time the room is quiet, I just look at her feeling like I'm facing my worst nightmare.

'Are - Are you serious Lin?' The words come out in a whisper and in the silence surrounding us I can hear my heart shattering. I let go of her, pushing myself up and putting some distance within our bodies.
