"Wake up, slut, we're here."

Laurie's elbow jabbed sharply into my shoulder, a sudden, unexpected poke that shattered my deep sleep. I jolted upright, my body reacting with a quick, startled movement as I let out a low groan. The stiffness in my neck was immediately apparent, the ache of having slept hunched over in the cramped airplane seat settling in. I hadn't exactly managed a peaceful rest.

I rubbed my eyes, still half-dazed, struggling to shake off the grogginess that wrapped around me like a thick fog. The soft hum of music from my left AirPod buzzed in my ear, its familiar rhythm helping to drown out the disorienting blur as I tried to focus. "What time is it?" My voice came out thick and slow, thick with sleep, as I squinted through the dim light filtering through the cabin.

"7:50," Laurie answered cheerfully, almost humming the response as though she had been wide awake for hours. I glanced over at her, blinking in confusion, because there was no way she had just woken up too. Laurie was sitting next to me, looking completely put-together, her makeup flawless—something she definitely hadn't had on earlier.

"When did you...?" My words trailed off, not quite sure how to ask what I was thinking. It felt almost ridiculous, given how exhausted I was, but I couldn't help it. "When did you do all that?"

She shrugged casually, a self-satisfied grin curling at the corners of her lips. "While you were snoring your way through the flight." She gestured dismissively, as though I had been entirely predictable in my unconsciousness. "Y'know...some people actually do productive things on planes." Her eyes flicked across the aisle to a businessman who was hunched over his laptop, typing furiously. "That guy? He's writing a whole thesis summary. Didn't even blink the entire flight."

I groaned, pulling my hoodie tighter around myself as I slouched back in the seat, my face half-buried in the soft fabric. "Bro," I muttered, barely audible. "I ain't doing jack shit this early." Laurie had known me forever—she'd seen this act countless times. I was definitely not a morning person, and I had the usual ache in my bones that came with waking up too early after a restless sleep.

Laurie's grin widened as she leaned over, suddenly thrusting her phone into my hands. I winced at the brightness of the screen as my eyes adjusted to the light. "Well, you better start doing jack shit," she quipped, her tone mockingly serious.

I squinted at the phone, trying to make sense of the image on the screen as the plane rumbled down the runway. It took a few seconds for my brain to catch up, but then I realized what she was showing me.

"I finished your menus," she said, clearly pleased with herself. There was a gleam in her eye as she spoke, like she was thrilled to share the progress. "Sent them over to Janelle. She's getting them printed today, so... you better start thinking about those cocktails."

My heart gave a little jump. I sat up straighter, the weariness momentarily pushed aside as I took in the design work on the screen. Laurie's talent never failed to impress me. The branding, the layout—everything about it looked sharp, clean, and professional. It was exactly the vision I'd been hoping for.

Plus, it was totally on brand for Sabrina.

"It looks amazing," I said with a genuine smile, my tone a little lighter as the weight on my chest lifted just slightly. I exhaled slowly, suddenly aware of the growing buzz in my brain. "I better not mess this up." The pressure of what was ahead hit me again, but this time, I tried to push the anxiety down.
