"...And your Nonna!! My god she'd never let you darken the church door with her again!"
I couldn't help but laugh as I pushed the bar up from my chest, sweat trailing down my temples. Laurie had been teasing me about the marks on my neck all morning, and this had to be the hundredth time she'd brought it up. Meanwhile, she stood there casually sipping from her water bottle, looking far too amused for someone supposedly spotting me.
The hotel gym had become our makeshift sanctuary this morning, an attempt to maintain our routine we did back in New York even while we were away. I'd always focused on full-body training, while Laurie religiously pursued what she'd dubbed her "summer ass transformation journey" — her words, not mine.
We practically had the whole gym to ourselves, it being occupied by just the two of us, which was really nice too.
"You're ruining my set." I grumbled, releasing a sharp breath as I completed my twelfth rep. With practiced movements, I guided the weights to rest on their supports before sliding out from under the bar. The padded bench creaked lightly as I pulled myself upright, reaching for my own water bottle.
"Good," she said with a teasing smile, her tongue poking through her teeth as she shot me a playful look. "But seriously though, your girlfriend's a vampire. If all of that happened in just one night after she asked you to be her girlfriend, I can't even imagine what you're going to look like after your honeymoon."
I felt a rush of heat to my cheeks at her teasing words, but before I could respond, she gasped, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
"Oh my god, I can't believe I now get to say my best friend is dating Sabrina Carpenter! How cool is that? Like, seriously, do you even realize how crazy this is? Don't fuck this up, Y/N/N, I'm serious. I'll take your place if you do," she added, her tone dripping with mock seriousness, though I could tell she meant it.
I couldn't help but laugh at her dramatic tone. "You're not even gay," I teased, shaking my head. "Also, what about Noah? Are you just gonna leave him in the dust?"
Laurie shrugged, twisting the cap onto her water bottle, clearly unbothered. "He'll live," she hummed, her tone light. "He's been pissing me off anyway."
I raised an eyebrow as I stood up, my messy bun now even more disheveled with stray hairs sticking to the back of my neck. We started walking toward the dumbbell rack, and I couldn't resist asking, "What did he do now?"
Laurie sighed dramatically, clutching her chest as if she'd just been mortally wounded. "He watched my favorite movie with his little cousin...without me. Can you even believe that? The audacity of this man is bewildering."
I smirked at her, amused by her over-the-top reaction. "You know you can watch The Princess and the Pauper anytime you want, right? It's not like it's gone forever."
She shot me a look, her expression a mixture of frustration and mock indignation. "Shut up. It's not about that. It's the principle of the thing!" She huffed, adjusting her high ponytail with a grumble. "If Sabrina watched The Heat without you, I think you'd be pretty pissed too."
I couldn't help but smile to myself, bending down to set my water bottle on the floor as we reached the dumbbell rack. "I wouldn't cry a river over it," I teased, glancing back up at her from my squatted position. "But I'd definitely make her watch it again with me... three times, to make up for it."
