"And... Anna?"
Sabrina's voice was light and curious, her tone almost musical as she kept chatting away, perched comfortably in the passenger seat of my car. She was leaning slightly toward the sun visor, expertly touching up her lipstick with the kind of ease only she could pull off. The overhead mirror was pulled down, catching the hints of early golden hour light as it streamed through the windshield, dancing across her face. Her eyes, sharp and focused, never left the reflection.
I smiled without even realizing it, my fingers tightening gently around the steering wheel as I took the familiar exit toward my neighborhood in Jersey. Bare winter trees lined the road, their silhouettes sharp against the cold gray sky.
"She's seventeen," I began, warmth threading through my voice. "An absolute sweetheart—boy crazy, hyper-focused on her grades, you name it. She's been practically living in her textbooks lately, all with her eyes on Princeton."
I let out a small laugh, glancing quickly in the rearview before merging. The road was clear, the late afternoon glow giving everything a soft, cinematic hue. "She adores you, by the way. Like... genuinely obsessed. When I told her about us, she screamed. Like, full-volume, couldn't breathe, kind of scream. She's been following you since, I don't know, your first EP."
Sabrina laughed brightly at that, the sound as radiant as the sunlight catching the gold hardware on her Prada lipstick. She capped it with a little click, flipped the visor closed, and turned toward me fully, tucking her knees up in her seat like she always did when she was getting cozy.
"Did she really?" she asked, her voice laced with playful disbelief. "She must think you're the coolest big sister ever."
I gave a casual shrug, even though I was grinning. "I mean... I am kind of amazing," I said, letting the joke hang between us.
That earned me another of her effortlessly joyful laughs. She reached down, her perfectly manicured fingers finding mine where it rested on her thigh. Without a second thought, she intertwined our hands, her thumb softly brushing the back of mine in lazy circles.
"And that's exactly why you're my girlfriend," she said with a smirk, her tone soft but teasing.
My heart gave a little flutter at her words. The light ahead of us turned red, and I eased the car to a gentle stop. With the world paused around us for just a moment, I turned to look at her more fully—her delicate features glowing in the sunlight, a strand of her blonde hair tucked behind one ear, the sparkle in her eyes like something pulled straight from a daydream.
"Have I told you that you're the most beautiful girl in the world?" I asked, the words spilling out without hesitation, because they were true in the kind of way that didn't need to be dressed up.
Sabrina let out a breathy little hum, another giggle escaping as her eyes dropped bashfully for a second. She gave my hand a soft squeeze, her thumb continuing to trace gentle patterns across my skin.
"Only like... a million times today," she teased, her smile wide and full of affection. "Have I told you how much I love you?"
I raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Only every second of this drive—and before that, all throughout this morning."
She laughed, and I brought our joined hands to my lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the back of hers. Her skin was warm and smooth beneath my lips, and I couldn't stop smiling even if I tried.
