Hope is an emotional response that helps individuals cope with stress, fear, and uncertainty. It often provides comfort and resilience during tough times, serving as a motivational force. In many religions, hope has a spiritual dimension. It may refer to trust in a higher power, faith in divine plans, or the expectation of an ultimate reward. Hope is a powerful and universal human experience, giving people the strength to face challenges and imagine better futures. It is a cornerstone of emotional well-being and personal growth. At its core, hope is a belief or feeling that something good will happen in the future or that current difficulties will resolve favourably. It involves optimism and a sense of possibility.
"You wanted to talk. Here I am," I said, my voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside me. He sat there, his eyes fixed on me, and I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze.
"Do you have something to say, or are you just going to keep staring at me?" I snapped, my irritation slipping through.
After a moment, he finally spoke. "Did I do something to upset you?"
I blinked, caught off guard by the question. Upset me? Why would he think that? I thought to myself, confused.
"Ever since that day," he continued, his voice steady but tinged with uncertainty, "I've felt like I may have said or done something wrong. You've been avoiding me, and I can't help but feel it's because of me. But I meant what I said, I'll do my best to give you the peace you want. Just... stop avoiding me. It's hard to do that when you keep running away."
His determination left me speechless for a moment. I couldn't understand why he cared so much. His words played over in my head, intertwining with Abbie's teasing remark: "Or maybe he likes you."
"Why?" I finally asked, my voice softer now. "Why do you want to do this? I don't understand why you care so much."
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I don't know either," he admitted, his honesty catching me off guard.
He doesn't know.
"I..." He hesitated before continuing, his words halting. "Truth be told, I feel this... urge to protect you. I don't know why, but please, don't think I'm weird or some kind of pervert or something," he added quickly, clearly flustered.
The sight of him panicking like that made me chuckle unexpectedly. His expression softened as he smiled back at me, and for a moment, a comfortable silence settled between us.
Finally, he broke the stillness. "I was hoping... maybe we could be friends?" he asked, his tone tentative but hopeful. 'Friends? he wants to be... friends with me?'
'"I'm not sure about that," I said, my voice hesitant, though I wasn't entirely sure why I was refusing.
"You don't want me as a friend? Why not?" he asked, his brows furrowing in confusion.
"It's not that I don't want you as a friend," I confessed softly. "It's just... I'm only now starting to figure out this whole friendship thing. Adding someone else right now feels like it might be too much for me ?."
"So, you want to but just don't know how?" he asked gently, trying to understand.
"I... I don't know if I want you as a friend," I admitted, fumbling over my words. "If I think about it, you've been kind to me from the very beginning, and all I've done is push your kindness away. I just don't want to hold you back or make things harder with this whole 'friendship' thing."
'"Don't worry," he said with a reassuring smile. "I'll show you how to be a friend."
"Me too," Abbie chimed in, plopping down next to me.
