Everyone was gathered in the living room- your father and your mother's gazes were glued on you as you told them that you wanted to share something important. Your friends were there too. You sat straight as you placed an envelope on the coffee table. Your father looked at it and then back at you, his gaze questioning. You could understand what he might be thinking right now. You cleared your throat as you began to speak.
Y/n- This is my permanent transfer order to U.S.
Your parents were stunned into silence, especially your dad. He was processing your words.
Mrs. Kim- What?
Her voice was barely a whisper, but loud enough for everyone to hear. Savanah looked at you, stunned. She was shocked to see how stubbornly you were sticking to your decision, even after the advice she gave you. It wasn't just advice- it was a truth you didn't want to believe.
Mrs. Kim- When did all this happen?
You couldn't bring yourself to meet their gazes, keeping your eyes fixed on the floor, feeling the weight of their expectations pressing down on you.
Y/n- Four days back.
It felt strange to hear yourself say it aloud. You had never made a decision without first discussing it with your parents. This, however, was the first time you had done something on your own—something this big, this life-altering. Moving to the U.S. permanently. The words tasted bitter in your mouth. You had zero interest in this decision. It wasn't something you wanted, not really. You didn't even know why you had asked for it in the first place. You had the option to stay here, to work here, to build a life here, but for some reason, you had asked for this transfer. The truth was, if you told your parents the real reason, if you told them that it was all because of him, they wouldn't understand. They wouldn't approve. And so, you kept it to yourself, swallowing the words that could make this even harder.
Y/n- And... it was me who requested for it. I had the option to stay and work here, but... I turned it down and asked for a permanent transfer over there.
Your mother's eyes filled with tears, the silent sorrow in them cutting deeper than any words could. You could see her trying to understand, trying to make sense of why you would make such a decision, but the hurt was already too much for her to hide. Her hands trembled as she wiped at her eyes, her lips pressing into a thin, unreadable line.
Your father, who had been silent this entire time, finally found his voice. It was low, controlled, but there was an unmistakable edge of frustration in it.
Mr. Kim- May I know why you turned down the offer?
You stood frozen for a moment, caught off guard by the question. You knew the answer, of course. You always knew the answer. But how could you say it out loud? How could you admit to them that you simply didn't want to be here anymore? That the weight of everything, the pressure, the memories, and him, had become too much to bear?
You opened your mouth, but nothing came out.
A moment of silence stretched between you all, thick and heavy, each second seeming to weigh a ton. Your father's gaze was locked onto you, his expression unreadable, as if trying to process what had just happened. Finally, he broke the silence, his voice steady but carrying an underlying tension.
Mr. Kim- Resign the job, you can work here. I have a few trusted people who can find a job for you at a well-reputed company. You'll get paid more than you would there.
You looked up at him, meeting his eyes, but it felt like your heart was being torn in two. You cleared your throat, trying to steady yourself, but the words came out, quiet and firm.
