Kavya stood in front of the mirror, trying to focus on getting ready for her engagement. Her heart felt heavy, and she couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness.
The excitement that should have accompanied such an occasion was missing. She didn't want to marry anyone not now, not ever.
She had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, of making a difference in children's lives, but now that dream felt out of reach.
The truth was, she never wanted this marriage in the first place.
She had agreed because of her father's pressure, but in her heart, she didn't want to go through with it. She didn't want a life dictated by someone else.
And after that conversation with Vijay's father a month ago, everything had changed.
That day, when Vijay's father had come and told her about Vijay's obsession, something inside her shifted. She didn't like Vijay, not really.
He wasn't the one for her, but his efforts his unwavering pursuit had made her heart soften, if only for a moment.
But then his father had come, crushing any hope she might have had...
The reality check hit her hard.
O N E M O N T H E A R L I E R...
Kavya walked through the front door of her house, exhausted from the day.
She immediately noticed her stepmother standing in the doorway with a smug look on her face. Kavya sighed, bracing herself for the usual drama.
"Look at you!" her stepmother sneered.
"Go inside. Your father is waiting for you," she added, a sharp edge in her voice.
Kavya froze, surprised. Her father was waiting for her? A sudden excitement washed over her. She hadn't heard those words in years.
Her father, who had barely spoken to her in recent times, was waiting for her?
She felt a small smile form on her lips, a feeling she hadn't had in a long time.
She walked in quickly, her steps light with anticipation, and found him sitting in his favorite armchair, looking as distant as ever. She called out to him.
"Appa."
"You are here?,"
Hearing him speak to her directly for the first time in what felt like forever made her eyes well up
. She nodded, the tears threatening to spill over.
"Yes, Appa," she whispered softly.
"Sit, I want to talk to you," he said, his tone commanding yet calm.
Kavya immediately obeyed, her heart pounding. She didn't know what to expect, but she was willing to listen.
Her father's voice broke the silence.
"Look, you're 22 now. You should stop roaming around. It's not good for a girl your age to be out all the time."
Kavya frowned but stayed quiet.
