I stared at the wall, still unsure and processing what had just occurred. The loneliness and despair were already threatening, wiggling their way underneath my skin. How on Earth was I to survive without him?

Amelia and Genevieve had been gracious enough to follow me up to my room. They sat in the sitting chairs, silent and unmoving, not even daring to breathe. The silence was a nearly sentient beast. I knew eventually, they would need to leave me, and that I would have to face the inevitable.

Genevieve slipped out of the room as quietly as she could. She must have sensed that there wasn't space left in my mind for anyone's presence just now. Amelia sat nearby, determined to be by my side no matter what came. I was grateful for her, to be sure, but I couldn't escape the buzzing thoughts in my head that convinced me that everyone close to me would someday be lost.

Tears flowed freely down my cheeks, landing softly on my hands that I forcibly kept folded in my lap. I ached to see Victor again, afraid he wouldn't show until the moment of his execution. Was he really content with a goodbye that had not been breathed?

Dinner was brought to me, but I refused it. I had no desire to touch even a morsel of food, and I knew I had no need of it. I was forever changed into the vampiric monstrosity of my worst nightmares. I knew the true nature of the Vampire's Curse; it was a condemnation to eternity. Perhaps Victor was even eager to escape it, hence why he had not exclaimed in outrage, only bowed his head in acceptance after the Councilman had announced his sentencing.

I shooed Amelia away. There was no need for her to starve herself when I wouldn't eat. She seemed relieved to be able to do so, but still turned a cautious eye over her shoulder as she left. "I will be fine, I promise." I told her, but I don't know if it instilled her with any confidence.
