It took Lucifer weeks to come up with something. How on earth was he supposed to save this woman from Adam? The only thing he could think of was taking her too but that wouldn't work. He'd already tried that once and it hadn't gone well. Stupid Michael. Would it have killed him to just keep this one thing secret?! If he had, then Adam wouldn't have another wife! No one would've ever realized that Lilith was even gone.
"If only you humans had free will like us." He had thought aloud to Lilith one day. That's when it hit him. Maybe they could! God had given the heaven born free will, maybe he could bring it to the humans too!
"Sera, how did God give us free will?" He asked her the very next day.
"You know the white tree in the center of the city?" She answered him, not fully paying attention.
"The one with the pole attached to it?" In the center of heaven was the tree of life. The leaves were stark white, whiter even than the clouds. The fruit thereof was the same story. The seraphim were given one of the fruits when they reached adulthood to stop their aging.
"God blessed the fruit to give us free will when it is consumed. Why do you ask?"
"Just curious." Sera regarded him with suspicion. Unable to think of any way Lucifer could cause mischief with this knowledge, she brushed it off.
Lucifer thought hard about this. Maybe if he brought the fruit to earth and gave it to Eve, she would have free will just like him. Then she could do whatever she wanted! She would be able to choose to leave Adam forever without Lucifer needing to get involved. It was the perfect plan!
Lucifer stole a fruit from the tree that very night. Stealing was wrong, but was it really stealing if it was his fruit? He was supposed to have it. What did it matter what he chose to do with it? He slithered back to his home before anyone could see him. Most of the angels were asleep this late at night, but Michael was always unpredictable. It was like he could sense when Lucifer was doing something wrong.
Lucifer entered their family's home. He tip-toed through the hallway. His heart stopped when he saw his brother's door open. He peeked inside the dark room. He breathed a sigh of relief. His dark haired twin was still peacefully sleeping. Weirdo. Who sleeps with their door open? Lucifer returned to his room where Lilith was waiting for him.
"Did you get it?" She whispered. Lucifer nodded and showed her the round, glowing fruit.
"I've been thinking. I have free will even though I haven't eaten this yet. Maybe it'll be enough just to give it to Eve. Maybe all the kids she'll have will have free will too."
"But what if they make a third wife? She won't have free will even if Eve eats the fruit. Besides that, you'll get old if you don't eat it. You really think they'll let you have another fruit when they find out you took one without permission?"
Lilith was right. If Lucifer didn't eat this fruit, he would get old. Maybe even die. He sat on the bed trying to think of some sort of solution to this, but he just couldn't think of anything.
"Maybe..." he mused, "Maybe I could plant it?"
"That's a great idea! You can eat some of it and plant the seeds! Then even if freewill doesn't get passed down to Eve's kids, they can still have a chance to choose!"
"Alright. I'll go tonight before they come looking for this."
"Yes. Get rid of the evidence."
He took a bite.
"How does it taste?" She asked him.
"Kinda mid."
