Alice and Isabel's journey to York was long and grueling, spanning weeks of winding roads, perilous seas, and the weariness of uncertainty. The English countryside rolled past, its green hills speckled with the first signs of spring, but Alice barely noticed. Her mind was consumed with the weight of reuniting with her brother, Henry. They hadn't spoken in over decades, not since the day she was "sold" to the Mohn household as a mistress, a fate she had resented for years. Yet here she was, returning to the only family she had left.
Isabel, seated beside her in the carriage, shifted uncomfortably. She had grown quiet as the journey neared its end, her eyes darting from the road ahead to her mother's tense profile. They had stopped in several towns, asking about Henry the merchant, son of John, until finally, a shopkeeper recognized the name and pointed them in the right direction.
By the time they reached York, dusk was settling over the bustling town. The streets were crowded with merchants closing up their shops, carts rattling by, and the sound of clinking coins in the air. Alice pulled her shawl tighter around her shoulders, her heart pounding as they walked through the streets, her hand tightly gripping Isabel's.
"Mother," Isabel finally spoke, her voice hesitant. "Are you sure he'll recognize you? It's been so long..."
Alice's lips pressed into a thin line. "He'll recognize me," she said, more to herself than to Isabel. "He has to."
They approached a small but well-kept shop nestled between two larger buildings, the smell of spices and leather wafting from its doors. Above it, a wooden sign swung slightly in the breeze, engraved with the name "John & Sons – Fine Goods and Trade." This was it. Alice's breath caught in her throat.
As they entered the shop, the bell above the door jingled, announcing their arrival. The interior was warm, filled with shelves of textiles, jars of exotic spices, and handcrafted goods. Behind the counter, a tall, broad-shouldered man with graying hair was tallying the day's sales. He looked up, his sharp blue eyes narrowing as they fell on Alice.
For a moment, there was silence. Alice stood frozen in the doorway, her heart racing, unsure of what to say, unsure if he would even welcome her.
"Henry," she finally whispered, her voice trembling.
The man's eyes widened in shock, and he took a step back from the counter. "Alice?" His voice was rougher than she remembered, aged by time and responsibility. He took a few hesitant steps toward her, his eyes searching her face as if trying to reconcile the woman before him with the young girl he had once known.
"Yes... it's me." Alice's voice was barely audible, her throat tight with emotion.
Henry stood still for a moment, then closed the distance between them in a few long strides. Without a word, he pulled her into an embrace, his arms wrapping tightly around her. The weight of decades melted away in that moment, leaving only the raw emotions of siblings reunited after too long apart.
"I thought..." Henry's voice broke as he held her close. "I thought I'd never see you again."
Alice closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of her brother's embrace. "I didn't think you would want to."
Henry pulled back slightly, looking at her with furrowed brows. "Want to? Alice, I've been trying to find you for years. I didn't know where you'd gone. After Father... well, after he died, I didn't know what had become of you."
Alice's eyes stung with tears, the mention of their father stirring memories she had tried to bury. "I left Mohn household," she said simply, her voice raw with old pain. "You— he sold me to the Mohn household, I couldn't stay. I thought I'd never forgive you for that."
