The evening air was crisp as Alice and Martin made their way toward the grand mansion, the flickering lanterns lining the narrow Parisian streets casting a warm, golden glow on the cobblestones. Martin, his ginger hair slightly tousled from the wind, adjusted the cuffs of his fine coat, a gift from the nobleman who had sponsored him to come to Paris. Alice, elegant in her simple yet sophisticated gown, kept close to his side, her mind racing with anticipation.
It had been years since Alice had been inside the halls of a noble estate, her time spent away from such high society. The rich scents of expensive perfumes and food, the hum of polite conversation, and the soft laughter of high-born women—the sounds of that life were all too familiar to her. But now, she was far removed from that world, and though she could blend in effortlessly, it all felt somewhat distant.
Martin, on the other hand, was still adjusting to this world. His reputation as a talented painter had earned him the favor of a wealthy nobleman, Count Delacroix, who had invited him to Paris and promised him a grand commission. This banquet, in particular, was a celebration of his success and an opportunity for the Count to discuss the details of the project.
As they entered the mansion, the sights and sounds of the banquet surrounded them. Glistening chandeliers hung above them, and guests in sumptuous robes and velvets mingled, their voices floating over the gentle notes of a lute. It was a grand affair, the kind Alice had once known intimately, and yet everything felt strangely distant now.
"Are you alright?" Martin asked, his voice low as he leaned close to her, sensing her change in demeanor.
Alice gave him a smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'm fine. It's just... been a long time since I've been to a gathering like this." She paused, her gaze briefly landing on a group of women, their laughter loud and unreserved. She had once been like them—the woman at the center of the attention, her beauty and charm the reason for their admiration. But she didn't want to be that woman anymore.
Martin squeezed her hand gently, grounding her. "I'm here with you. We're here together."
Alice nodded, grateful for his steady presence. He, too, was out of place here—an artist, a man from humble beginnings, now thrust into the world of Parisian aristocrats. But in many ways, his humble origins made him stand out among them.
As they approached the host—a tall, imposing man with dark eyes and a sharp jaw—he greeted them with a warm smile, though with an air of formality.
"Ah, Monsieur Martin, and Madame Alice," Count Delacroix said, bowing slightly. "It is an honor to have you both here tonight. I trust the journey was comfortable?"
Martin smiled, bowing his head. "Your hospitality is most generous, my lord."
Alice gave a polite curtsy. "Thank you for your invitation, my lord. It is a pleasure to be here."
"Please, let us walk and talk," the Count gestured, leading them down a corridor. "Monsieur Martin, I've seen some of your work. It is truly exceptional. I would like you to paint my entire mansion—everything. The walls, the ceilings, portraits, frescoes. You will have full creative freedom. I trust that your talents will bring this space to life in a way that befits its grandeur."
Martin's eyes lit up with excitement. "It would be an honor, my lord. I look forward to the challenge."
Alice, walking beside them, kept her thoughts carefully guarded. She was proud of Martin's success, but part of her still wrestled with the unfamiliarity of their new life. It wasn't so much the opulence of the surroundings—it was the stark difference between the life she had known before and the quiet peace she'd found now. She wasn't who she had once been, and she wasn't going to let anyone make her feel as though she was.
