Chapter 15

Max

"You did it!" Lauren smiles, jumping into my arms and planting a kiss on my lips. I sure am going to miss that. "But wait. I didn't die, how am I here?"

"You're dreaming." I reply. "It's really me but we're not in Heaven."

"Why am I asleep?" She asks, confused.

"I brought you back to the coffee shop when you were closing. Charlie never took you and you went home and had your evening with Alex..just like you were supposed to." I sigh, with my hands in my pockets, swinging my foot back and forth. "On Earth now, Charlie killed himself three years ago; when his grandmother died."

"Oh..well that's good right? And you're not in trouble for killing someone?" She asks hopefully.

"I actually have fantastic news." I smile, excited to tell her everything that's happened.

"Really?" She perks up.

"Yes!" I exclaim, holding her hands.

"Well, spit it out already!" She giggles.

"Well for starters, Bill got a girlfriend and he's in training to become a guardian!"

"No way! Oh my gosh, I'm so happy for him!"

"Me too! But you want to know the absolute best part of everything?"

"Well, of course!"

"Okay, brace yourself." I tell her, pretending to get serious.

She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. "Braced."

"The Council agreed that for saving not one human life, but three and for getting rid of Charlie, I was granted one wish." I tell her.

"What did you wish for?" She's practically falling over in anticipation for me to just tell her already.

"I'm going to be human!" I shout, jumping around before picking her up and spinning her in circles while she laughs and screams.

"No way!" She exclaims as I let her down. "That means we can actually be together!"

"Well.." I rub the back of my neck and look at the floor.

"What?" She asks, her mood instantly dampening.

"I won't remember any of this and neither will you." I put my hand on her arm and pull her closer. "There's a very high chance that we'll never meet."

"What?!" She stomps her foot and pulls away from me. "That's not fair! I love you, Max! We were meant to be together!"

"Lauren. If we were meant to be together it will all work out. I can almost promise you that. You'll see." I kiss her lightly on the cheek.

I get barely an inch away before she pulls my face to hers and kisses me passionately. I'm gonna miss the way she tastes. I'm gonna miss everything about this gorgeous girl.

We move our mouths in time to each other, me putting my hand behind her neck in an effort to get her even closer. Her breathing starts to speed up and she's running her hands over my chest and back and through my hair.

She drags her fingers through the feathers on my wings causing me to shiver in pleasure and excitement.

I'm still an angel so I just barely pull away.

"I'll find you." I whisper, closing my eyes as I kiss her once more before snapping my fingers.

I slowly open my eyes, to see sunlight peeking through the blinds of my bedroom window. Rolling over, I watch Alex as he breathes, his eyes moving behind his closed lids indicating that he's dreaming. He twitches a few times which is how I know he's in a deep sleep.

I run my fingers along his face, down his neck and finally down his arm before holding his warm hand in mine.

I place soft little kisses on his nose and eye lids before finally on his lips. He twitches again before stretching, making him groan.

"Good morning." I whisper, bopping my finger on his nose, making him smile.

"Good morning." He returns, wrapping his arm around me and pulling me into his chest. "Did you sleep good?"

"I don't know." I respond honestly. "It was one of those things where I woke up but don't even remember falling asleep. You know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I know what you mean." He rolls on his back, putting the arm that isn't under me behind his head. "That doesn't surprise me though. We stayed up half the night talking and you fell asleep while I was telling you about my day. Thanks for that, by the way." He teases.

"I'm sorry, baby." I coo, rolling slightly and kissing his nipple.

"Did you just kiss my nipple?" He laughs.

"It was right in front of my mouth so yes I did." I giggle.

"Cute." He replies simply, kissing my forehead.

"I know." I joke, getting out of bed.

"Where are you going?" He whines, reaching his arm out for me to come back.

"I have this thing called a job," I say, making my way to the bathroom, "and I believe you do too."

"Oh. Right." He gets out of bed as well and joins me in the shower; but this time I wasn't sitting down.

"Hey, what's got you looking so happy?" Marissa asks me. She came in to visit me and I haven't stopped smiling since I left my apartment.

"Oh, nothing." I reply, making it obvious that it was something.

"Tell me!" She begs, grabbing my arm and causing me to almost spill coffee everywhere.

"I'm just moving in with Alex and going to Hawaii. No biggie." I shrug, barely able to contain the never-ending smile.

Marissa squeals and bounces on the balls of her feet. "No way! Oh my gosh, I'm so jealous. I wish I had a guy to take me places." She whines. "I'd be perfectly fine with just a friend with benefits. I'm sure he could take me places, if you know what I mean."

"Yeah, I know what you mean." I roll my eyes at how boy crazy this girl is.

"I'm going to miss this place." I sigh, handing a mocha latte to the customer who was looking rather frustrated with how long I was taking. I shoot her an apologetic look.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I have to quit and get a job somewhere else. Alex lives in Greenwood and I don't even have a car. I can't work here anymore." I sigh. That's the only thing I'm upset about. This is the café where Alex and I met in the first place. It has a lot of meaning to me.

"I'm sure there will be another café just like this one. You can still serve coffee; I know that's your dream." She pats my arm sarcastically causing me to laugh.

"I don't know. I might try to finally go to college. I've got enough money saved up that I could at least do online, if not on campus. I'd like to be able to have a career not just a job."

"Yeah, I understand." She nods. "Well, I have to go, babe. I'll see you later?"

"Of course! You're gonna help me pack!" I laugh.

"Did I say later? I meant never." She jokes before hurrying out of the store.
