Chapter 13

Lauren

"I just don't understand, Max!" I yell, biting on my thumb nails. "I don't understand how Alex getting coffee spilled on him could change everything so drastically! How did that happen, anyway?"

"Oh, uh, I have no idea. Weird." Max says, scratching his head.

"Charlie said that it was part of his plan all along; to kill Alex and Marissa. Does this mean that every single time I've died, they have too? Where are their guardian angels? Why do they have to die too? I guess, even if I do live, my life is basically over on Earth because the two people I care about the most are going to die anyway!"

"Hey hey," Max tries to calm me down, "it's okay."

"How Max?!" I throw my hands up in the air as I pace. "How is anything possibly going to be okay?! You said I have to go back down to earth but why? Why can't I stay here with you like I want if I'll have absolutely nothing to live for down there! I don't see a single way out of this." I fall to the ground and start to cry, surrounded by fog.

"I can't do it. I can't go back there to just have everyone I love ripped away from me. I don't want to live like that!" I stand up and grab Max by the front of his shirt almost falling on him. "I just want to die. Please, Max, please, just let me die!"

"Enough!" Max shouts, holding me back by my shoulders and quieting me with his unexpected aggressiveness. "That is enough, Lauren! You have everything you could possibly want down there! Why can't you just open your eyes and see that?! I have been watching you every single day of your life and just wishing I could have what you do! You have a purpose, someone to love, someone to tell everything to!"

"But, Max-"

"No. I don't want to hear it! Up here I have no one! Everyone thinks of me as a klutz and a screw up! I would give anything to be able to live like you and be able to experience things like you and to be able to love you!" He stops short when he says that.

"You..what?" I ask breathless.

"I..I want to be able to love you, Lauren. I want it to be me you're spending the night with and moving in with and flirting with at work. I want to be the one to treat you like a princess and hold you when you're sad. I am so incredibly in love with you but you're out of my reach." He holds my face and plays with my hair. "You're literally so out of my reach and it's so unfair. You are utterly perfect."

"Max, I don't know what to say." I whisper as he lowers his face so our foreheads are touching.

"Don't say anything." His voice shaking.

He lowers his hand to the back of my neck and slowly brushes his lips against mine before I close my eyes and the space left between us.

Max

I knew kissing her would be amazing but I never dreamed it could be this good. I move my mouth in time with hers, heating up my whole body, as she brings one hand up into my hair and the other around my waist pulling me closer.

This must be Heaven.

Oh wait.

All too soon, she softly detaches her lips from mine.

"I love you too." She whispers, laughing slightly.

"Why are you laughing?" I panic.

"Because I'm happy, Max." She rolls her eyes and laughs a little more.

I smile so big I think my face will break. She said she loves me too. Oh my gosh she said she loves me too! This is incredible!

I pull her in for a hug, burying my face in her hair that I love so much. I guide her back and see tears once again coming from her eyes.

"Oh shoot, why are you crying again?" I pout, wiping her tears away.

"I don't know!" She wails. "I have a boyfriend and I love him and I can actually be with him but I love you and I want to be with you so bad but you won't let me." She gets out in one breath.

"Hey there; breathe." I joke.

"Sorry." She blushes. Dang, she's so cute.

I can't believe she kissed me back.

I can't believe I kissed her.

Oh my goodness, she was flipping out about her boyfriend dying and I kissed her!

What kind of angel am I? Good people, don't help other people cheat!

"Lauren I am so sorry!" I suddenly blurt, stepping back from her.

"What what?!" She screams, checking all over her body for something wrong.

"I didn't mean to scare you I just..I kissed you and you have a boyfriend." I frown.

"Yeah, but a dead boyfriend!" She tries to reason before biting her thumb nail again realizing what she just said.

"While I'm already feeling guilty.." I start, "I tripped the guy who spilled his coffee on Alex."

"That was you?" She asks, stifling a laugh.

"Yeah. Are you mad at me?" I ask sheepishly.

"Of course not! Because of you, we know Charlie's plan to kill Alex and Marissa! Maybe we can stop it!" She jumps around excitedly.

"Well..I have an idea but I don't know how "Earth you" would handle it."

"Well, tell me!" She smiles, making me want to kiss her again.

"You have to kill Charlie." I tell her, pursing my lips in regret.

"What? Max, I can't kill anyone." She gasps in horror.

"Lauren, it's the only way. Like I said before, even if we stop him today, he's just going to try another day and it will be all of this all over again."

"Maybe that's okay!" She exclaims, getting excited at her idea.

"What do you mean?" How could that possibly be okay?

"Because that means I can be with you and Alex at the same time!"

"Lauren..no. I won't do that to him and I won't let you do it either. You're being irrational right now and you know it. You love Alex. You just can't live like this forever."

"You're right." She sighs. "What's wrong with me?"

"Absolutely nothing." I tell her, tucking her hair behind her ear.

"Okay." She whispers.

"Okay what?" I ask confused.

"I'll do it. I'll kill him."
