chapter four. without you

IT had been a whole moon since Princess Rhaenyra had left Kings Landing, leavjng her only daughter alone.

The hour had grown late and Alaessa had found Aemond on a balcony starting off at the night sky, his silver hair glowing in the moon light just as Alaessa' did when she walked over to him. She'd remembered that neither of them wished for the betrothals but knew it was their fate.

"Aemond."

Her voice made him jump, "You seem awfully distant tonight, Aemond. Are you not tired of staring at the stars? They won't answer you, you know."

Aemond smirked but never turned to the princess, "I'd rather listen to the stars than to the endless chatter of court. They have secrets to tell, if one knows how to listen."

Alaessa raised her eyebrows, "Secrets? Or just cold, distant flames? I prefer the warmth of the sea to the chill of the night sky."

Aemond turned to face her, "The sea is beautiful, but it hides dangers beneath its waves. Just like people, wouldn't you agree?"

Alaessa brushed her hair away from her face, "You speak as if you know danger well, Aemond. Is that why you keep your distance from everyone?"

Alaessa knew Aemond found more elsewhere then people, she never saw him around many people in court, but more into the books he reads of history and philosophy, and leaning High Valyrian.

"Perhaps. People are fickle, Alaessa. They wear masks that can be as beautiful as the finest jewels, but they often hide treachery beneath," He sighed and Alaessa' softly spoke, "Not everyone is treacherous. You know that. There are still those who are genuine, who care for you—"

"Like me."

Aemond eyes narrowed, "Do you truly care, Alaessa? Or is it mere curiosity that draws you to me?"

Alaessa frowned, "I care because I see beyond the crown and the fierce gaze. You're my uncle, my family and you are human."

Aemond stepped closer to Alaessa, "And that's a flaw, is it not? Being human? It makes one vulnerable."

Alaessa looked him in the eye, "Vulnerability is part of strength, Aemond. It's what makes us real. It's what makes us feel."

The young prince spoke quietly, "Feelings can be a burden. I've learned that lesson too well."

She'd reached for his arm, "Then let me share that burden with you. We are both trapped in gilded cages, are we not?"

He studied her hand on his arm, "You're right. But what good can come from sharing burdens? It only makes them heavier."
